I was 16 years old when I met Skeet on the beach in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. He was a young man with black curly hair and dark skin. He wore no shirt or shoes, and his legs and chest were covered in thick, black curly hair. I was scared, but I also felt a sudden rising power and a new sense of my body and skin.

In 1965, my mother forbade us children from going to the beach in New Hampshire, except for one summer when my grandmother drove us down to the beach in her 1955 Ford. We spent the evening walking with the crowd, stopping at our favorite stores.

My mother went to the beach with me each day that summer, and she worked with Peter, the editor of New Hampshire Profiles magazine, on a federally funded project. They studied the causes of the riots the year before, and came up with recommendations to prevent them from happening again.

I was a good girl, and I followed the old rules until my mother met Peter and stepped into his world. Now, I was on my own to make up the new rules. I spent the first weeks of the summer holding myself to the old rules. Then one day, I shop in the cheap little stores along the beach while I wait
