10 Life lessons FROM A PRISON GOVERNOR

From the age of 22, Vanessa Frake worked as an officer at HMP Holloway, a women’s prison in London, dealing with criminals including murderers Myra Hindley and Rosemary West. She thought she’d seen it all, until she transferred to the even tougher world of men’s jail, HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Vanessa went on to make it one of the most secure prisons in Britain and was awarded an MBE for her work.

‘Thanks to TV, everyone thinks they know what goes on in prison. But do they?’ she says. Now retired and volunteering at an animal sanctuary, Vanessa has written a book about her 27-year career. So, what has it taught her?
