Zodiac Signs - Taylor Moon
INTRODUCTION
To me, astrology is without a doubt the most accurate and comprehensive means of understanding human personality, behavior, change, and growth.
—STEPHEN ARROYO, ASTROLOGER
I remember the first time I looked at my horoscope in the local newspaper. I was around eight years old sitting with my grandma at her kitchen table while she was drinking her coffee and reading the front page. Though I usually grabbed the comic strip section, I also liked reading the advice section where people would write in and get advice from the columnist.
Right below this section was labeled Your Daily Horoscope.
Intrigued, I looked a little closer. Each horoscope seemed to predict how your day would go based on your zodiac sign, and according to my birthday I was apparently an Aquarius. It gave a basic prediction that I would have a great conversation with a friend that day, and my young mind was shocked that someone had the ability to predict how my day could go. This was my introduction to learning about the zodiac signs, and I’ve been hooked ever since!
From that day forward, I would read my horoscope in my small town’s newspaper almost daily. I also discovered that my mother had a few astrology books on her bookshelf, so one day I decided to look up Aquarius
in one of the books. As I read, descriptions such as aloof,
detached,
and unemotional
seemed to be a theme. This doesn’t sound much like me . . .
I thought, but also being the Aquarius I am I tried to keep an open mind about it.
All of these years later, I realized that even those of us that call ourselves astrologers have a difficult time describing Aquarians. Often called the aliens
of the zodiac, they possess a certain quirkiness, but also a groundedness that makes it difficult for people to put their finger on them. All at once, the Aquarius personality can be active, expressive, interesting, and inspirational, yet at other times moody, indifferent, and apathetic due to their sometimes serious way of thinking. Because they have a coolheaded demeanor and tend to keep emotions somewhat under lock and key, people can’t easily point Aquarius out like they can a passionate fire or sensitive water sign. And if they are more of a Saturnian Aquarius, they may be mistaken for a responsible and stable earth sign.
So what exactly does it mean to be an Aquarius? First, let’s discuss a little astronomy. From our viewpoint on Earth, the sun travels around the Earth once per year. Over the course of that year, the sun seems to appear in front of
or in
different constellations for about a month, and the dates often listed for horoscopes are when the sun appears in that specific astrological sign. The passage of the sun through a particular zodiac assisted ancient cultures in knowing what time of year it was. The sun is our most powerful planet. Without it, the Earth would cease to exist. Just like the sun gives light, food, life, and warmth to the planet, in astrology, your sun sign is the essence of your personality. Your sun sign is your identity, your energy source, ego, and the true you. If you were born between January 20th and February 18th, you were born when the sun was in the constellation Aquarius. So congratulations, you are an AQUARIUS! Dates may differ from year to year, though.
Aquarius, the eleventh sign of the zodiac, is typically depicted as the water-bearer and is symbolized by a glyph that looks like water or electric waves. Because of these two symbols, people mistakenly think that Aquarius is a water sign, but that’s not the case. Aquarius is one of three air signs, and is represented by a human figure pouring water from an urn (i.e., the water carrier), eternally ready to pour forth spiritual knowledge to the people. The water does not represent emotion, it represents wisdom and truth.
According to the book Archetypes of the Zodiac by Kathleen Burt, Aquarius is "artistically depicted as an angel, an immortal messenger to mankind from the gods, a perfected being who has liberated himself from the limitations of time and space so that he can fly between heaven and Earth with his lofty concepts. Angels inspire, guide, instruct, guard, protect, and sometimes struggle with us to do the right thing. Superior beings, intermediaries between God and man.
Some Aquarians have the gentle and generous disposition of the (Buddhist) Bodhisattva, others are fiercer angels who fight for principle (which displays the courageous nature of the Leo polarity). Like all signs, it depends on the energies in the individual horoscope.
Embracing their angel-like gifts and truth-telling natures, most Aquarius are born to give back to humanity by spreading truth and knowledge to everyone around them. The dominant key phrase of Aquarius is I KNOW.
And Aquarius does know, to an extent. Even an Aquarius child seems to be wise beyond their years, but the true wisdom of an Aquarius is developed through their life experiences and personal quest for knowledge, in which bits and pieces of valuable information are obtained throughout the years. Their keen powers of observation (scientific mind) allow them to move through life noting important details while engaging their power of analysis, synthesis, and classification rather quickly. Aquarians also have an amazing imagination (artistic mind) and are able to use it to visualize the creation of new things essential to their progress and the progression of humanity. Their imagination allows them to reflect on the past with clarity and help them form ideas and a practical vision for the future.
As the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius is considered the visionary sign of the future. The ruling planet of Aquarius is Uranus, which means that an Aquarius will embody many of the characteristics that Uranus represents. Uranus rules innovation, sudden change, and revelation. It also governs the future and
