    Chapter One

I sit in the back of the car, the skyscrapers floated past as the traffic finally picked up. It was another exhausting day, so many meetings before the end of the season. The Damari Empire was exhausting to run since my father passed, I did not realize how much needed to get finished. It was my first year as head of the Damari, and I needed a proper break.

You look pissed, said Luc, my business partner and childhood friend, Come on, Agost. You’re really going to have to loosen up. You’ve been making everyone tense, he looked down at his phone, and smiled, Look at this— He flashed his phone. On the screen was the image of his blonde courtesan, Cera, a woman he met through the Creative Match sitting with a trio of kittens, I couldn’t help myself. Since I’ll be away for two weeks, I had to get her something. She’s been asking for a cat for months, he smiled, so pleased with himself.

You’re really taken with her, I say, only half interested.

It’s hard not to be. She’s everything I wanted, and the company is nice, said Luc as he responded to her photo, You really should try out the agency. It’s the only risk-free dating service for guys like us.

I still don’t get the appeal.

"Think of it this way. For the first time you don’t have to worry that someone wants to date you for your money. You actually know they are dating you for your money—so at least you can start off by being honest. No dealing with the messy stuff of falling for the heiress whose family just wants to take your fortune, he said. He crossed his legs and kept his gaze fixed on me, And you can find someone you want. Like truly want. It’s more than just looks; they also match based on compatibility and interests. It makes it last, there was conviction in the way he spoke, You’re basically the only one who hasn’t given it a proper shot, Agost. You should do yourself a favor and try."

Do you get some kind of commission by convincing me? I ask, You’ve been telling me about this for months.

It’s a business decision, he gave me that smirk I know so well, one built on years of friendship, The best bosses are the ones that actually have a reason to go home. And I’ve been waiting for you to get a reason for years. You’re the head of the Damari House. You need to think about heirs anyway.

The streetlights begin to glow, the night begins to set in the city. I hear the whir of the other cars beside us, our car elevated thousands of feet in the air onto the skyway towards my apartment.

Here, said Luc as a message pinged onto my phone.

I look down and see a personalized invitation to The Creative Match.

I took the liberty of creating a profile for you. You have been pre-approved with my recommendation so now all you need to do is look through your matches. Now you don’t have any excuse.

You know me too well, I say. I click to download the app, How long have you been planning this?

Once Cera and I made it to our third anniversary, I thought you would think it was proof enough that it worked, he said, "But I will give you the push that you need. Besides—you do need to relax. Today was our last office session for the summer. Find something to occupy yourself besides that town of yours."

Future Edo is more than just a town that I keep for a hobby, I say, trying poorly to defend myself, It’s my test case of a perfect society.

Yeah, okay. And a weird fusion of future tech and ancient customs, he complained."

Better a town than—how many islands now? I dig at him.

Oof. Well. We all have our hobbies, he said, "And they are more than islands, they are animal sanctuaries. Cera loves animals."

    So I’ve heard, I answer.

The driver slowed up to the dock that led directly to my penthouse. It was my oasis in the metropolis of Neo Angeles. The hub of all major trade in the galaxy, and where I often had to conduct business in renegotiating rates for the Damari Crystals during the business season.

    Promise me you’ll look.

Fine, I say, I’ll look tonight.

It was easier to agree with Luc than to try to change his mind. Besides, he did exceptional work. If the worst thing that happened was that I wasted time staring at a bunch of women, it would not be a major loss.

Have a good season, says Luc as he waves me off.

Good season, I say. The shuttle flies off into the city lights.

I walk inside of my penthouse, the lights automatically greet me.

    Welcome Master Damari.

The automated voice system. It was integrated into every part of the suite, curated to my specifications. I shrug off my blazer and begin to loosen my collar. Another long day. More negotiations. At the very least, it was time for the off season.

I sat down on the couch.

    Shall I order food?

Yes. The normal from downstairs, I say, the complex offered a fully stocked and staffed kitchen around the clock. It was helpful since I never had to worry about shopping, and had whatever I wanted at my disposal. There was little reason to leave my solitude in Neo Angeles except to go to work and visit Future Edo.

    A ping on my phone.

Have you started looking? a message from Luc.

It hadn’t been five minutes and already he was on me.

    Looking now. I respond.

I have to wait for my food anyway.

I open my phone; the sleek interface greets me as I see my profile. Of course, Luc picked my headshot—it’s the best image of me. My long white hair tied back; my slender frame held together by a fitted suit. And most importantly, the violet eyes to mark me as a true member of the Damari.

There is a little notification. Four hundred matches.

Luc wasn’t kidding when he told me there were literally hundreds to pick from. All of them offering potential futures. I scan the profiles, lazily swiping. My eyes glance over face after face, young women all with eager expressions, I swipe—

Oh, I surprise myself, stopping at a young woman. Twenty-four years old, and a monsterkin, one of the kitsune variety. I stare at her face, her pink curls framed her tanned skin, her bright grey eyes gazed at the camera, a gentle smile on her lips. Pink hair. A special variant. My eyes linger at the photo.

The patriarch of the Damari fortune was said to have a kitsune lover. That she had brought him great fortune. Kitsune were a part of the Conglomerate, the group of allied planets for economic prosperity. Her people came from a world of other half-beasts, human in appearance, but with animal ears, horns and tails. The kitsune had stood out, known for their unique culture and art, they became a favorite among those of the higher classes. Biologically, they are known to enhance their partner. To provide them lasting health, long lives, and luck. It made sense why they were so coveted.

Many of the kitsune had scattered among the planets, their communities decimated after centuries of them being forced into servitude. It wasn’t until the accords over three hundred years ago that eliminated slavery. Instead, a new system was born, one where the woman would benefit as much as the man, where matters of flesh could be taken care of for the right price. Courtesans.

I focus on the screen. On top of her heritage, the kitsune was
