    Lady Augusta Haverhill’s studio flooded with light as she prepared the set for her painting of the day. She was known as the Spinster of Setton Place, the once grand mansion that stood at the top of the hill, overlooking the sleepy countryside town of Setton. Its main export was goat milk, the goats were known for their particular diets of Setton clover that made their milk extra sweet. The business itself was steady—no real growth, just consistency. Lady Augusta Haverhill always paid her taxes on time and was never questioned about her life as a shut-in.

    To her, it was all by design.

    Lady Augusta was never one that was interested in courtly life. A voracious reader from a young age, she was highly educated compared to most women in the entire country. She learned from an early age that she did not want what was expected of her. Her desires were that of following her muse—of being a renowned artist. A dream that was barred from her, regardless of her station.

    Women were not allowed to enter the Academy of Art. It was a place that was considered unfit for a woman’s disposition. Instead of being allowed to study the human form, she was told to focus on still life. Landscapes. Animals. All subjects brought her nothing but boredom. She wanted to create dramatic images of battle, somber paintings of tragedy, and pure expressions of love.

    Her early work focused on herself. She filled her home with self-portraits, each of them showing her skill evolve. She understood her face and body intimately, spending countless hours with the curve of her full bottom lip. The way her crimson hair curled around her face. She became an expert on herself in her hours of meticulous study, filling her weekends with paintings rather than attending balls. It was a fuller life than she could have hoped.

    Without the pressure of her parents who died when she was young, she was in control of Setton Place without any danger of losing her claim. When she was
