Penny Holton
Penny Holton spends a lot of time thinking about sex, but never having very much of it. Perhaps the spark came from her all-girls high school, where she'd hear about the sexual escapades of her friends, but never participated in them. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a major in journalism (minor in classics), she started pounding the pavement. But there wasn't a lot of calls for a chubby reporter too shy to interview anybody. She ended up working freelance -- a column here, an editorial there -- but nothing to keep her bank account filled. After all, she had three cats to take care of (and they're fat). But while she put her cerebrum to work, her hindbrain was free to wander. And sometimes it went to strange places. Places that asked questions about sex and love, the duality of human nature, and the differences between men and women. And what would it be like to fall in love with a centaur. When she's not writing, she can be found drinking a cup of coffee and staring at the field out the back window of her Midwestern home, imagining it was Rivendell or Hyrule. Lucas Davenport sat on a rock next to the entrance of the cave. He pulled out his observation notebook.
August tenth. Arrived at cave entrance. Fluorescent mushrooms at corners. Some milkweed and popinbrush. Few animals in vicinity.
As he wrote, he recited his words for the benefit of his mentor--Alistair Barnaby Wrayburn—in case he wanted to offer feedback. Wrayburn was an accredited professor of anthropology with a cryptozoology emphasis at Fordham University. If anyone knew what should go into a field report, he would.
Wrayburn stood at the mouth of the cave staring into the darkness. His hands were on his hips, the same as his statue on campus.
This is what it's all about, lad. Living with history, instead of reading about them in dusty old books. Breathing the same air they breathed.
Lucas poked his head through the cave's threshold, holding out the hooded lantern. The beam of light illuminated stone walls but failed to find an end. Looks like it goes deep.
"Very deep. Formed from a lava tube millions of years ago.
The arachnette's habitat depended on a winding maze to trap the prey, letting her victim tire themself. She'd know every cranny and curve, the
