Invocation
Om
May my limbs, speech, breath truly,
My eyes, ears and strength actually;
All the senses but fully developed be,
All Upanishad revealing - Brahman be;
May I never deny Brahman in reality,
May Brahman never ever disown me;
Let no renunciation from Brahman be,
From my side let there be no infidelity;
May the Dharma extolled shine in me,
Who intent to know Self - shine in me!
Om PEACE PEACE PEACE
Let peace be in environment and me!
Let peace be in forces acting on me!
Let there be Peace totally completely!
In English rhyme
Part One
King Brihadratha, made king his progeny,
Deemed body transitory, wanted insularity;
Went to forest, performed penance honestly,
After years, sage Sakayan appeared finally;
He as smokeless fire, burning shinning be,
Said: "King, arise, choose a boon lovingly’;
Brihadratha bowed and stated very softly,
‘I am ignorant of the self - Do educate me’.
‘This happened in past and impossible be,
Do ask for any other desires but certainly’;
Brihadratha touched his feet reverently,
Said, ‘Of what use enjoyment in body be;
It smells, a mass of bones, skins, etc.be,
Home of lust, anger, apart from Dear be;
Lost in people, hunger, thirst continually,
It decays as the flies and mosquitoes truly;
Great kings relinquished this world clearly,
Departed even as his kins watched plainly;
How Gandharvas, Asuras, Yaksas, died we see,
Oceans dry, mountains fall, North star shaken be;
We see trees and earth are uprooted completely,
After all the joy in this world there but rebirth be;
I am like a frog in a deep dark well - Do uplift me,
You are my refuge - show the true path to me.
Part Two
The sage Sakayanya being but pleased clearly,
Said, ‘King, You are the flag of Ikshvaku dynasty;
You know self and famous as son of Marut be,
This indeed, is yourself but unquestionably;’
‘Which, O Lord’ Brihadratha asked then simply,
Sage said: ‘It cannot be described very easily;
Bound by external causes, going upward be,
It but is suffering and yet is not in the reality;
The suffering dispels the ignorance certainly,
As the sun dispels darkness ever unfailingly;
The tranquil approach Supreme rising from body,
Manifests self in essence, immortal, fearless be;
This wisdom imparted to us by Lord Maitreya be,
I shall teach you the same - so do hear intently;
Valakhilyas, sinless, chaste, radiant powerfully,
Asked Prajapati, ‘Lord, inert as cart is this body;
Which being has greatness that body set up be,
As conscious - who is the driver of this body.’
He replied ‘He who is beyond speech, pure, holy,
Empty of delusion, placid, breathless, endless be;
Independent, unchangeable, eternal, unborn, free,
Be in his very own glory - He is the driver definitely;
‘How can this body be set up like this in reality,
By one who is but devoid of desire completely?
‘The self subtle, non-object, invisible - Purusha be,
Awakens sleeper, in part present here consciously;
Conscious is part of Purusha, knower of the body,
Its marks imagination, determination and conceit be;
It the Lord of the creatures, the eye of all does be,
By conscious is the body set up - It the driver be;
‘Lord, how can such a being exist in part - tell me?’
‘This Prajapati was there in the beginning but lonely;
He contemplated on self and made beings many,
They unaware of him, breathless, inert as post be;
He unhappy wanted to kindle their awareness truly,
Thought: ‘I’ll enter them giving awareness clearly;
Making himself like air, he entered subsequently,
Not as one but making self but five-fold actually;
Prana, Apana,
