#1 I have a gift of being able to keep going no matter what. I am not masochistic about it, because I have a method. I can’t block out the pain, so I have to embrace it. My family is tough, and we always have been.

#2 I had a close relationship with my mother, who was a great athlete in her own right. I always wanted to be like her, and when I was injured, she would be there to help me.

#3 I was a skier and bike racer, and I was always able to keep up with the bigger and stronger guys because I loved to suffer. When I went all out, putting 100 percent of my energy into something, I felt good.

#4 I met Lance in 1994, when I was entered in the Tour DuPont race in Wilmington, Delaware. I was fascinated by his energy and his in-your-face style. I admired how he celebrated at the finish line with a touchdown dance.

S. national team. But I had one chance: the prologue time trial, where I would race against the clock alone.

    #6

The next day, as the peloton rolled out of Wilmington for stage 1, I wondered if some of the pros would talk to me. But not one of them did. I was disappointed, but also relieved. I didn’t mind being anonymous.

    #7

I had always heard the Tour de France was hard,
