The Immortal Story Teller - Susi Pearson

    Chapter 1: Big Surprise

A young couple went walking in the woods on the outskirts of the town.

The sun is starting to set. Those creatures at night will be coming, the young husband stated to his wife.

The young wife looked at him and nodded.

They headed back towards the town, when the woman stopped in her tracks.

We must go, my love, the young man said, with some urgency. He tried to pull her closer to him.

Do you hear that? she questioned, looking at him.

It is probably those beasts trying to lure you away, he replied.

I am sure of it, she stated, as she pushed away from her husband. The young wife went deeper into the woods to follow the noise.

    Kathrine, the young husband called.

The wife didn’t respond, as she kept following the sound.

Kathrine! the husband yelled, as he went after her.

The husband found his wife in the heavily wooded area to see her holding an infant.

I knew I heard a baby, Kathrine told him, with a smile.

What is a baby doing out here? he questioned, while looking at the infant falling asleep.

I don’t know. I found the baby in that marquee, she stated.

We really must be going now, the husband persisted, as he led his wife and the new baby out of the woods.

    Two years later

Others are talking about where we found our son, James, Kathrine mentioned, as she stared out the window. I heard your mates talking about Jack being from an animal.

It is just bloody talk between chaps, Kathrine, James stated, as he sat on the couch. If it makes you feel better, we could move to the States. Got a better job offering there.

With the factory work? Kathrine asked, as she turned to face him.

    Hmm-mmm, James responded.

Within the month, all three moved to America. James got a leadership job in the factory and they both raised Jack to take over his father’s position when he became of age to do so.

    Fourteen years later

Jack, since you are now sixteen years old, it is time for you to really start taking more of the leadership role, James told his son over the dinner table.

    Thank you, sir, Jack replied.

All right, son? Kathrine asked, noticing how pale and sweaty he was looking.

Get some fresh air before it gets too dark, James instructed.

I think I..., Jack couldn’t finish his thought before he felt pain. He held his head in his hands and started yelling in agony.

Kathrine gasp and rushed over to her son, what hurts?!

    Everything! Jack screamed.

What did you put in the food? James asked.

    Nothing different! Kathrine snapped.

Jack fell to the floor in severe agony. Bones started crunching and skin stretching. His body was changing, and Jack’s clothes ripped apart and fell to the ground. No longer human he was becoming.

James! What is happing to our son?! Kathrine questioned in terror, as she scrambled to get away.

James leaped from his chair. Both stared in bewilderment at what was happening.

The werewolf stood there looking down and his white fur glistened.

James ran to retrieve his shot gun and quickly came back. He pointed at what used to be his son and cocked it.

What are you doing!? Kathrine shouted, as she stood up.

That is not our son, James responded, coldly.

The werewolf stood wide eyed with his tail between his legs and ears back.

James fired and barely hit Jack.

The werewolf did not hesitate and ran out of the house, knocking his mother down.

His father went after him shooting at the beast. The second shot grazed Jack’s arm. The werewolf ran through the town. Everyone in the way was knocked down and others jumped out the way. There was screaming everywhere.

The werewolf kept running towards the forest. He was in shock of what was happening and not able to focus on where he was going and ran full force into a tree, rendering Jack unconscious.

    The next day

Jack awoke to find himself laying on a blanket. He sat up and was met with a splitting headache.

Ah, you are awake now, a man said, who was sitting in front of Jack.

What uh...what happened? Jack asked, with his head in his hands.

You don’t remember anything, mate? the man asked.

I um...no. No, not really, Jack replied, as he tried looking at the person talking to him.

There are clothes folded on the side of you, the man told him.

Thanks, Jack said, as he grabbed the clothes. That is when he noticed a part of his left arm was bandage. What happened to my arm?

You really can’t remember a thing. Think mate, the man responded.

Jack took a moment as he slowly dressed himself.

I remember screaming. Lots of screaming...and..., Jack paused to get his thoughts together. Gun shots.

Can you remember who shot you? the man questioned.

I was shot? Jack questioned, while staring at his bandage. My father. Something bad happened...I can’t remember.

Of course, it is something bad if your own father shot you, the man stated, with a slight smile.

Maybe, I should...I should talk to him, Jack said, while stumbling to get up.

That won’t be a good idea, mate, the man stated. Come with me. I will introduce you to some blokes of mine.

Jack nodded and followed the man out of the woods.

The name is Kenneth by the way, he introduced.

    Jack.

You seem very young. How old are you, Jack? Kenneth asked.

    Just turned sixteen, Jack replied.

Almost an adult now, Kenneth stated.

Where are you taking me to? Jack questioned, as he noticed they were passing through the town to the other part of the outskirts.

I own a traveling freak show, Kenneth replied. It is a fun thing, despite the audience is starting to dwindle down now. The 50s is not a good time for us freaks.

Heard about them, but never went to one, Jack said.

Check it out and if you want to work there you are more than welcome, Kenneth mentioned, with a grin.

They eventually made their way to the large tent.

    Roger! Anthony! Kenneth called out.

The two of them rushed over.

This is Jack. Found him in the woods, Kenneth told them.

Roger and Anthony exchanged looks of curiosity.

    Alright there, chap? Roger asked.

    Yeah, alright, Jack replied.

Go, round up the others, Kenneth told Anthony.

Anthony quickly got the others that make the freak show.

Introductions are in order. This is Missy, the bearded lady, Kenneth said.

Willie, the giant and Gregory, the midget, Kenneth said, gesturing to them.

Betty and Beverly, the conjoined twins. People find the more dangerous it is to separate, the more they enjoy seeing them, Kenneth stated, with joy in his voice.

Our brains are connected, Betty and Beverly mentioned in unison.

They tend to speak in unison a lot, Anthony stated.

But, you really should see when they argue, Roger said, with a snicker.

It usually is vicious and one sided, Anthony mentioned.

Last, but not least, we have Dennis. He is known as the dog-face boy, Kenneth introduced, while pointing to him. Dennis is about your age, Jack.

It is nice meeting you all, Jack said, with a small pleasant smile.

Have to show you what would really get us back to the top, Kenneth told him, while gesturing Jack to follow him.

Roger and Anthony followed closely behind.

This is our 8ft tall 10ft wide heavily silvered metal cage, Kenneth proudly showed off. It will house our exotic animal.

What animal are you going to have in there? Jack asked.

Why, you of course, mate, Kenneth responded, with a devilish grin.

But...but I am not an animal, Jack stated, nervously.

Kenneth went into Jack’s face, you will find out tonight, mate.

Roger pushed Jack into the metal cage and Anthony quickly shut the door and locked it.

Please, don’t do this! Jack pleaded.

He doesn’t look like an animal to me, Missy mentioned.

Oh, but he is, Kenneth told Missy. Let me tell you a story, Jack, Kenneth said, as he turned his attention back to the scared young man.

Back in England, my brother, Nigel, had a foolish plan. He assured me it would be best for the freak show. To capture a fantastic beast. There was this lone wolf and we tried to tie it up with silver. It was much stronger than we anticipated, and Nigel sacrifice himself, so me and me mates could get away, Kenneth revealed, staring at a nervous Jack. And what did I find when I came to the States? A werewolf! A werewolf fell into my lap. I am not passing this opportunity.

The other members gasp, and all looked at each other with wide eyes.

That’s what happened. I, uh...I am a werewolf, Jack stated to himself, as he stumbled backwards.

Brilliant, you are remembering, Kenneth stated happily. So tonight, you will be making your grand appearance.

Kenneth made his way to Dennis, the dog-faced boy, your days are numbered.

    Chapter 2: Showing Off

Jack sat in his cage, slowly rocking himself. He tried to hold back his tears, as he was freaking out about the night.

The other members stared from a distance. They were all uneasy about the night show as well.

Roger and Anthony came back from handing out fliers for the special show.

How did it go? Kenneth asked them.

Some are excited for the surprise, but a lot are scared to be out because the previous night, Roger replied.

Brilliant, Kenneth stated, with excitement. Everyone get ready. We got a show soon.

Kenneth, please let me go! Don’t do this, Jack pleaded, while holding on to the bars. The tears he held back now freely fell down his face.

Oh, don’t cry, wolf-boy. Everything will be okay. You will heal, Kenneth told him, not caring for his feelings. Night is approaching. Better get ready.

Jack started breathing heavily in anticipation for the transformation. He sat there, still holding on the bars and wishing he could just go home. Jack quietly cried to himself.

Night came, and Jack felt his transformation. Wasn’t as painful as his first, but still quite uncomfortable. He didn’t think about taking his clothes off and it shredded to the floor.

    Ah, that’s better, Kenneth said.

The werewolf stood on all fours, just staring at his captor.

We are going to wheel you in as the last to be shown, but we are going to need something to hold you back. Don’t want the fine people getting hurt, Kenneth told him.

The werewolf kept his gazed fixed on him.

As you may know, silver is a natural enemy of a werewolf, Kenneth stated as he got closer to the cage. And we got plenty, he continued, as he showed the silver chains in his hands.

The werewolf looked concern as he studied the chain.

Roger and Anthony quickly grabbed each of Jack’s arms through the bars. They stood on opposite sides of the metal cage and hung up his arms by the wrist with the chains to the bars. They had to stand on stools to get the right height.

It burns! the werewolf groaned in pain.

That is why we are using it. You won’t have the strength to fight, Kenneth told Jack as he walked behind the cage.

Kenneth wrapped the chain around the werewolf’s neck to position his head up and stood on a stool as well to lock the chains to the bars.

The werewolf bellowed in pain as his back pressed against the bars. The werewolf barred his teeth as his bellow turned to growls. Tears started streaming down his face again.

Kenneth made his way back to the front of the cage.

There, a proper viewing of a fine creature, Kenneth stated, proudly, as he checked out the wolf, then to his friends.

This place will be filled with blokes now, Roger mentioned, excitedly.

People should be arriving any minute. You two stay here and wait for my signal, Kenneth instructed, then headed to the stage area of the large tent.

The two nodded, then proceeded to cover the cage to make a grander entrance.

Jack had to remain still as he whimpered under the cover.

Welcome, welcome ladies and gentlemen! Kenneth yelled out to the handful of people that showed up. We have a special show for you tonight.

The crowd murmured to what they were going to see.

But first, our not-so-normal normal freaks, Kenneth said, enthusiastically. Missy, the bearded lady!

Missy came out with a well fitted dress and her hair up in a bun. She stroked her beard, which caused the crowd to snicker.

Kenneth quickly grabbed her beard to fan it out, more proper then us chaps can get.

The audience laughed, and a few men nodded.

Kenneth smacked her ass as she made her way to the far end of the stage and stood there with a scowl to her boss.

    The crowd clapped.

Very nice, Missy, Kenneth told her, then turned his attention to the other side of the stage. We have Willie, the tallest bloke!

Willie stepped up and stood next to Kenneth to show how much taller he was.

Now, Willie is about 8 in a half foot and I am a merely 6ft, Kenneth told the crowd. Not everything is big about him, he continued, cheeky.

The small crowd seemed to enjoy seeing the height difference.

Gregory, the midget! Come stand here, Kenneth directed.

Gregory made his way to stand next to Kenneth.

Gregory here is about 3ft tall. Aint he cute? Kenneth continued.

Gregory rolled his eyes a little. Obviously tired of how Kenneth talks about him to the crowd.

Don’t you just wish to pick him up and dress him in baby clothes? Kenneth asked the crowd.

The audience was loving it and laughing.

Thank you. Stand by Missy you two, Kenneth told them both. Speaking of a duo and two girls I would love to get between. Betty and Beverly!

The conjoined twins walked over to the stage. They smiled and waved to the audience.

    The crowd murmured with wonderment.

Their brains are connected and can never be separated, Kenneth informed the crowd.

That seemed to excite the crowd even more.

Give them a twirl, girls, Kenneth instructed, happily.

The conjoined twins slowly moved in a circle.

Thank you, girls. Now, head over to the others, Kenneth continued. Almost to the main event, but first we have Dennis!

Dennis walked over to the stage. The crowd laughed at seeing his face covered in brown hair.

Dennis, or we call him, the dog-face boy! Kenneth said, while wrapping his arm around the seventeen years old. The hair is so soft, he said, brushing his hand over Dennis’s face.

    The audience laughed and clapped.

I am glad you are all having a good time. How about I show you the main attraction? Kenneth questioned the crowd.

    Everyone roared with excitement.

Bring it out, mates! Kenneth called out.

Roger and Anthony wheeled out the covered cage.

This may terrify you, but I assure you everyone will be safe, Kenneth mentioned, then he nodded to his friends.

They removed the cover to reveal the werewolf chained inside.

The crowd gasped. Some instantly stood up, while others jumped back in their seats.

Ladies and gentlemen! Please settle down and back to your seats, Kenneth ordered. This werewolf is chained and can’t attack, he continued, while walking to the side of the metal cage. Let me demonstrate, he said, while taking out a small dagger from his inside jacket pocket.

Kenneth grinned to the crowd, then to Jack.

The werewolf moved his head a little to see what Kenneth was going to do.

Kenneth stabbed the werewolf in the side. Jack howled loudly as his body tensed. He kicked his leg up and slammed it back down.

The rest of the freaks winced at hearing the wolf in such agony.

    The crowd gasped.

See. Now, come down everyone and get personal with all the freaks, Kenneth told everyone, as he removed the dagger.

People slowly made their way to get closer to the caged animal.

The werewolf kept his eyes close and whimpered softly. The wound started dripping blood slowly.

Are those chains causing the burns? a man asked.

Yes, silver is your ally, Kenneth replied.

It looks painful for the beast, a woman noted.

Better the beast than you, miss, Kenneth told her. Now, I invite you all to not be afraid and go ahead and touch it, he told them. Feel how soft the fur is, he continued, as he pried Jack’s tail from between his legs.

Several people came forward to touch the thick fluffy fur.

Wow! a few of them exclaimed.

If you enjoyed your time here, please come again tomorrow night and bring your mates. We are no longer doing shows during the day and will be here for another week, Kenneth disclosed to all the guest.

    The crowd started to leave.

Roger and Anthony moved the metal cage back to the corner. They removed the chains and the werewolf fell to the ground.

You’re a monster! Missy shouted in Kenneth’s face.

I am a monster? Then what is that in the cage? Kenneth questioned.

He hasn’t done anything to you or anyone, Missy replied.

He hasn’t done anything yet, Kenneth stated. He is a werewolf. He is a wild animal. That werewolf would hurt someone one day, so why not make serious money from it now.

You are sick, Missy stated quietly to him.

Kenneth, he is still bleeding, Roger declared.

You said it would heal when the silver is off him, Anthony mentioned.

That is what I thought, Kenneth said, as he stared at the blood forming into a puddle. Maybe, I shouldn’t stab it. Let the crowds to that.

Shouldn’t have anyone stabbing it, Missy snapped, as she went to get something to bandage the wound.

The werewolf laid still. Couldn’t move from the pain and shock.

    The next morning

Jack woke up to Kenneth, Roger, and Anthony staring at him. Kenneth walked in and Jack immediately sat up against the corner of the cage.

The bandage came off him and fell to the ground.

See, boys. He healed and just a scar now, Kenneth told them.

Still shouldn’t do the stabbing, Roger ordered his boss.

Right, Kenneth agreed, as he smiled at Jack.

    Chapter 3: Escape

Jack went through several shows. Receiving the same treatment as the first night. More and more people attended the shows and more people were touching him. A few of them are even stabbing as well.

This one night something snapped within Jack. He felt his animal side growing with each passing night, but this time he felt more of the animal he is.

As he stood in the cage, chained to both sides, his animal side kicked in a full force.

Kenneth just announced for the audience to come down and meet the freaks.

The werewolf bellowed and ripped the chains from the bars. The bars of the cage bent a little from the force.

A lot of the members of the audience screamed and leaped backwards.

The werewolf grabbed Kenneth by the throat and shoulders. Kenneth’s face was pressed hard against the bars.

Let me go! the werewolf snarled in his face.

Anthony quickly pulled the tail of the angered beast to distract it. When that didn’t work, Roger grabbed the dagger that had fallen and tried to stab the beast. The werewolf released Kenneth and moved away in time. He growled at Roger.

Kenneth held his face, as he screamed in agony.

The crowd looked on in horror. Most of them quickly gathered their belongings and ran out.

It broke my nose! Kenneth shouted. You will pay for this, wolf boy, he stated, angrily to the growling animal.

The other members of the freak show looked at each other and smiled slightly at seeing their boss get what he deserves.

    The next day

Jack awoke that late morning to hearing the metal cage open. He was violently kicked in the stomach. Jack immediately starting coughing and gasping.

    Grab him, Kenneth ordered.

Roger and Anthony quickly picked up the naked scared teenager and dragged him out of the cage.

I told you, you were going to pay for breaking my nose, Kenneth told Jack.

I-I am sorry! Jack shouted in fear. I don’t know what happened!

Ballocks! You knew what you were doing! Kenneth yelled.

I couldn’t control it! Please! Please, I am sorry! Jack yelled, tearfully.

I will make sure of that, mate, Kenneth said, then punch Jack in the face.

Jack began to cry loudly, as blood flow from his nose.

Kenneth ignored his tears and punched him again in the stomach. He then got his dagger.

Jack spit blood out of his mouth. Please...don’t kill me.

Just going to teach you a little lesson, Kenneth said with a grin.

The other freaks quickly approached them. Willie, the giant, smashed Roger’s and Anthony’s heads together. They fell to the ground unconscious. Jack fell too, but tried to get up.

Dennis, the dog-face boy, quickly came to his side to help him up.

How dare you! I have given you lot a good life and this is what you do!? Kenneth questioned, irate.

You never treated us with respect! Gregory, the little person exclaimed.

What are you going to do about it? Kenneth asked, in more of testing manor.

Gregory went and punched Kenneth in the groin, then Willie threw Kenneth across the room. Everyone except Dennis and Jack went after him and gave him what he deserves.

Here, Dennis said, while giving Jack his clothes. Quick and leave this place.

Jack rushed to get dressed. He ran out and never looked back. He spent the next few days getting far away from New York.

    Chapter 4: New Life

Jack found himself in Kentucky; exhausted, starving, and alone. He stumbled upon an abandoned village.

Jack collapsed from sure exhaustion. He saw a figure of a person approaching him before he passed out.

He is no son of mine, James said in anger.

Jack heard gun shots and screams. Chains rattled, and people gasp and clapped. Kenneth appeared in Jack’s face and stabbed him, then there was darkness and silence.

    Hika, a voice instructed, sternly.

Jack woke in a cold sweat. It took him a few minutes to adjust his eyes to his environment.

Hika, the voice said again, with his hand on Jack’s shoulder.

Jack looked over to where the voice was coming from. An older man with long black hair that was fading to grey, was kneeling by him with a cup in his hand.

    Drink, the man insisted.

Jack sat up and took the cup from him. He gladly lapped up the sassafras tea.

    Nanta Chilholhchifo? the man asked.

I am sorry? Jack asked, as he handed the cup back.

    Name, the man replied.

    Jack.

Saholhchifoat Miko, the man said, gesturing to himself.

    Jack looked at him puzzled.

    Name is Miko.

Thank you, Miko, Jack said. Where am I?

My house, Miko responded, with a smile. Minti cha impa.

I am sorry. I don’t understand your language, Jack said.

White people don’t, Miko stated, as he headed to the fire pit in the center of his wattle and daub house. Minti cha impa means come and eat.

Jack didn’t hesitate to sit by Miko to get food. Miko handed him a bowl of soup.

An older woman made her way inside the small house and joined them in eating.

Imihoo’, Miko introduced, while gesturing to the woman. Name is Anaba.

Nice to meet you, Jack said to her, but she just looked at him and mumbled to herself.

Anaba is lost. White people moved our imokla, our people, from our land, Miko revealed, with some hurt.

Why? Jack asked, as he finished his soup.

Miko put his hand on Jack shoulder, white men are greedy and scared.

    Jack just nodded.

Thank you, but I should leave, Jack mentioned, as he got up.

Hoomi, hashiat ittola, Miko stated, as he stood up as well.

Miko pointed outside, then led Jack out.

The sun is setting, Jack noticed, looking at the sky.

That is what I said, Miko told him.

Sorry. What language are you speaking? Jack asked.

We are of Chickasaw, Miko answered.

Oh, well I have to leave now, Jack stated, as he began to take off.

You don’t have to leave, nashoba, Miko told him.
