A BRAND NEW CHAPTER

Congratulations to everyone who was longlisted, shortlisted and placed in the second ever Chapter Book Prize 2021! There were a total of 82 entries, and the standard was very high.

Choosing from the brilliant shortlist was extremely difficult, but finally we found our winners. Huge congratulations to Jessica Nelson, Jon Cox and Stephen Rogers.

Chapter 1

The night was dark and the moon was full. The stars were twinkling in the sky and the badgers were tinkling on the ground. Bats and owls flew a merry dance and the stench of magic hung in the air like an angry moth. A lone wolf atop a great hill let out a blood-curdling howl. The poor thing had stubbed its paw on a badger. Such was the scene at the start of our tale.

Then from the north, an icy wind did blow and brought with it a sudden storm. The rain lashed, the hailstones smashed, the thunder crashed, the potatoes mashed and the lightning flashed… and scorched the lone wolf’s eyebrows. It really wasn’t his night! And as the lightning
