    Immortal Secrets - Susi Pearson

Chapter 1: No More Talking About That

Jack Wolfe, a faraway voice called out.

Jack looked around for the source.

So, you are the one, the voice said closer this time.

Jack froze in fear and realized he was surrounded by darkness.

That Jenna loves, the voice whispered in his ear.

Who are you!? Jack demanded, although a little shaky.

Just a shadow of a memory now, the voice answered.

Jack could see a shadow moving around him but could not make out what or who it was.

I just had to see for myself, the voice stated, now materialized in front of him. The shadow only revealed his face and fangs.

Jack stumbled backwards causing him to wake up.

He sat up abruptly, breathing heavily.

The sun was just starting to shine, and he was human once more.

Had another one of your nightmares? Jenna sleepily asked. I thought you didn’t have them anymore.

No, this was different, Jack replied.

How so? Jenna questioned, as she sat up.

I think Darius came to me, Jack answered.

    What? Jenna questioned. How?

I don’t know. You used to dream of him, Jack stated. You told me you knew how he did it.

Yeah, but I thought he needed to be alive to do that, Jenna mentioned, as she stood up. She folded up her sleeping bag.

Do you think Christoph will know more? Jack asked, as he got up to fold his sleeping bag too.

Maybe, Jenna said, holding her sleeping bag to cover her naked body. Though I think I dreamt of him more.

Let’s head back to the house and I will ask him, Jack mentioned, holding his sleeping bag to cover himself as well.

They walked a little way before they met up with Christoph and Welfen.

You two really should sleep closer to the house, Welfen stated, as he got his clothes from the chest on the porch. He quickly got dressed and walked through the back door of the three-bedroom house.

We like to play in the water, Jenna yelled out to her father. She put her sleeping bag in the container near the chest.

Not by the lake? Christoph questioned, after he got his clothes on.

No, no, not that far, Jack quickly said. I actually want to talk to you about something.

Okay. Talk inside, Christoph responded, then went inside.

Jack and Jenna put their sleeping bags away and got dressed as well before heading inside.

Cindy and Welfen were cooking breakfast together. Jenna headed to the table by the kitchen.

What are you guys cooking? Jenna asked happily.

Your father is making the scrambled eggs this time and I am cooking the bacon, Cindy replied.

Are you going to do your home fries, Mom? Jenna questioned.

I don’t have the time, Cindy responded, while looking back at her. Sorry, honey.

Jenna sat back in her chair and sighed.

What did you wish to speak to me about? Christoph asked Jack.

About Darius...and dreaming, Jack answered slowly.

    What about it? Christoph questioned.

The two of them slowly walked towards the table to join Jenna.

How did it work? Are you still dreaming about him? Jack asked.

He had to make a connection of some kind, then I guess he could feel them when they slept, Christoph replied.

Is it possible to dream of him without ever meeting him? Jack inquired, as they sat down at the table.

Did you dream of him last night? Christoph requested.

I believe so, Jack answered. He wanted to meet the person Jenna loves.

Sounds like he wanted to make sure you were good for me, Jenna smiled.

Good morning everyone, Jessie said, as she came downstairs.

Good morning, Jessie, Jenna mentioned. Then Cindy said it.

Sorry, I didn’t wake you up, Christoph told her.

It is fine, Jessie mentioned, while putting her arm around him. Cindy’s and Welfen’s breakfast woke me up.

    Christoph, Jack called.

Christoph looked back at Jack and remembered what they were talking about. Have you been asking Jenna about him?

Off and on, Jack asked. Just curious about their relationship three years ago.

Enough, Welfen scolded, as he put the pan of scrambled eggs on the middle of the table.

He was just..., Christoph tried to say.

We are not talking about that vile vampire ever again, Welfen told them angrily. Darius is dead and buried back at Vermont. Can’t we let it go now?

    Dad, Jenna said.

No more talking about that! Welfen snapped, then sat down.

Everyone looked at each other, then silently ate scrambled eggs and bacon.

Well, I should be heading to work now, Cindy said, breaking the silence. She stood up and washed her plate.

We still got time before we need to go to work too, Jessie told Christoph. She looked at him with a slight smile.

I can think of something to pass the time, Christoph mentioned, after finishing his last bite.

Oh please, Jessie said, as she got up from the chair. As soon as your head hits that pillow. She imitated snoring.

Cindy snickered, while hugging Welfen from behind.

Hey. I can’t help it, Christoph stated, as he got up too.

    They both washed the dishes.

Bye everyone, Cindy said, gathering her belongings. "Enjoy your day off Jenna and Jack.

See you later, Jessie replied, then her and Christoph went upstairs.

Do you have to say that every Monday, mom? Jenna asked.

Yes, Cindy answered happily before leaving.

Now it was just Welfen, Jack, and Jenna. She stood up and put her plate in the sink.

Could you wash it, please, Welfen stated.

    Jenna sighed loudly.

Do you have to give attitude all the time when I ask? Welfen questioned.

Do you have to give attitude when someone mentions the D-word? Jenna snapped.

I have made my self very clear to never talk about that vile vampire, Welfen snapped back.

Just because you have issues with him doesn’t mean we all do. And he was not vile to me. You just... Jenna tried to say.

You don’t know how he was in the beginning and you never will know! He was using you. Treating you the way you wanted to be treated, Welfen told her.

You just never cared to get to know him. He was tormented by his own kind, Jenna stated.

    Enough. Please, Welfen said.

You are just afraid of thinking about him, or dreaming about him, Jenna replied. Or admitting that you were wrong about him. She stormed upstairs.

Hopefully, she grows out of her teenage years, Welfen uttered under his breath.

Welfen and Jack sat in awkward silence for a short time.

I am sorry for mention anything, Jack said quietly to him.

    Thanks, Welfen replied.

    Jack! Jenna called out.

Jack got up from the table and washed his and Jenna’s plate before going upstairs.

What took you? Jenna asked, a little annoyed.

I was finishing my breakfast, Jack answered, as he sat by her on the bed.

I’m sorry, Jenna said looking away. Darius is a sensitive subject for everyone.

    I see that, Jack responded.

You can tell me anything. Everything related to Darius, Jenna told him.

Okay, but I don’t think there would be anything to say, Jack stated looking at her.

    Chapter 2: Remember This?

Sounded like a door slammed, Jessie mentioned, as she looked towards their bedroom door.

I am sure Welfen and Jenna got into another argument about Darius, Christoph stated. He pulled Jessie closer to him as they laid together.

She turned to face him, he must have really messed up your son.

Welfen never took his guard down, Christoph mentioned. Followed more of his mother.

Do you still dream with him? Jessie asked.

Christoph opened his eyes and looked at her. Not really.

You sound so surprised, Jessie giggled.

I guess I didn’t realize I wasn’t dreaming about him, Christoph stated, while moving to his back.

You should probably shower before we go, Jessie told him.

Would you join me? Christoph asked flirtatious, while looking at her.

Jessie smiled and put her hand on his bare chest. Not enough time for that. I don’t want to be late for work.

Lucky for me, I have a very understanding boss, Christoph said, then kissed her.

Yeah, but I would hate to have to fire such a fine worker for being late all the time, Jessie mentioned, in between kisses.

But it would be worth it, Christoph said.

    Just go shower, Jessie scolded.

Fine, Christoph replied, then got up and left the room.

Jessie got her clothes and stuff ready to go. She showered after Christoph and they headed downstairs.

Everything okay with you and Jenna? Christoph asked Welfen.

The usual, teenage attitude, Welfen responded.

She is not a teenager anymore, Christoph said.

I know, but still acts like one, Welfen replied.

Be easy on her, Christoph told him.

    I will try, Welfen said.

I am excited to get to work. Let us go, Jessie mentioned nearly squealing.

The two of them left the house and got into Jessie’s car and drove the thirty minutes to the town where they worked.

I love this time of year! Jessie stated.

People usually say that about Christmas, Christoph said.

Jessie parked the car on the side of her store. The buildings were close together. The bookstore and the grocery store shared an alleyway, while the grocery store and veterinarian were conjoined. The diner that they frequent shared an alleyway with the vet. Yeah, but September is not too early for Fall celebrations.

I have noticed your love of Halloween has grown through our relationship, Christoph stated, as he held the door open to Jessie’s Books Café.

Well, dating a werewolf sure puts you in the holiday spirit, Jessie whispered. Okay, so I need you to remove all the summer books from the shelves and place the Halloween theme ones up.

Yes boss, Christoph replied, then headed to the back to grab the boxes.

Jessie ordered her hot coffee and Christoph’s iced coffee from the café side of the store. She then got her side of the store ready for business.

    A little while later

Christoph was half-way done setting up the Halloween books.

Hey Chris, come here, Jessie called over.

What is it? Christoph asked as he approach the counter.

Look what I have as the book of the season, Jessie smiled big as she held a book up. Remember this?

    Werewolf Abroad? Christoph questioned.

Yeah, Jessie answered, while turning the book over to look at the cover.

The memory of Darius first telling him and Welfen about a book that was inspired by their time on the steam ship flooded in his mind.

Hey, are you still with me? Jessie asked.

Oh yeah, sorry. Lost in thought, Christoph replied.

Jessie put the book on a stand on the counter. Do you need a break?

No, I am good, Christoph quickly answered, then headed back to putting the books away.

    Chapter 3: Tension

It was mid afternoon and Jack and Jenna were watching tv in the living room. Welfen was enjoying the fresh air on the back porch. The back door was in the living room, but he would not be able to hear them much.

Jenna laid a blanket over her and Jack’s lap. Then she placed her hand under the blanket. Jenna slowly begun to rub his groin area.

Your father is just outside, Jack stated, quickly grabbing her arm to stop her.

When will you get that my father accepts you in my life? Jenna questioned irritated.

Its not that simple, Jenna. We have only been dating for three years and I am still getting used to being fully included with a family I want to be with, Jack told her. Even though your father accepts me being with you, I am sure he doesn’t want to catch us in the act again.

I get it, just thought you would love the attention since we don’t have to hid it, Jenna stated, roughly removing her hand away.

Of course, I love the attention you give me. Of course, I love that we can sit here and hold each other, Jack said, holding her hand. I am sorry I am still nervous around your dad.

Jenna smiled at him and squeezed his hand.

Have you talked to Abby lately? Jack asked.

Yeah, she will be online to chat about 5 0’clock, Jenna replied. She looked over at the small digital clock on the top to the side of the couch. Oh! It is nearly 5 now. She leaped from the couch and ran upstairs just as her father walked in.

Why is she running? Welfen asked Jack.

Her friend is supposed to be online, Jack replied.

Ah, Welfen said. What were you guys watching?

Some documentary on artic life, Jack responded, while taking the blanket off him.

I have secretly wondered what penguins taste like since Christoph and Jessie had that trip to Alaska, Welfen mentioned.

Jack chuckled a bit. Then there was awkward silence between the two. They both tried to communicate with each other, but always came off as awkward.

I am going to start dinner, Welfen stated.

Jenna and Abbigail were on the phone while Abby started up her laptop.

Well, not all guys like the thrill of getting caught, Abby told Jenna.

I was just touching it, not asking for it, Jenna replied, while laying on her bed.

Mark was all about the thought of getting caught, Abby said.

How is it now with the long distance? Are you tempted by all the hot college guys? Jenna asked in a teasing way.

I guess it is okay. Though I do feel like a break-up is soon, Abby replied. "The guys aren’t hotter than they guys
