Chapter 1: Final Day Of The Tournament

A young man named Lance ironically holding a blunt end lance while mounted on a trusted stead, took a deep breath as he held tightly to both weapon and reins. This was the final in the jousting tournament. The best knight would be honored with riches and help lead the charge in battle the following day.

The crowd fell silent with bated breath as they anticipated the two great knights to compete. The signal was sound and both horses raced toward each other from opposite directions.

Lance kept his focus on where his spear would hit and nowhere else.

Then a loud thud and crack filled the arena. Lance’s spear broke upon hitting his opponent, knocking him off his horse. Lance was victorious in this tournament.

The winner! Lance of Canterwall! the announcer exclaimed.

Lance got off his horse as the crowd cheered. He walked over to his opponent. No hard feelings, William.

It was time you bested me, William stated as he got helped up.

You weren’t that far better than me, Lance smirked.

Draw your sword and I will prove I can still best you, William told him.

Haven’t you had enough embarrassment for one day? Lance questioned snide.

William chuckled. I will let you walk away with this win...this time.

Lance scoffed, then went up to the wall where the king and queen sat to watch.

You did excellent out there, Sir Lance, King John declared.

Thank you, Your Majesty, Lance said.

You deserve a hot bath before speaking with the Grand Cross, King John told him.

Thank you, Your Majesty, Lance repeated with a bow.

Meet us in the great hall after, King John instructed him.

Lance bowed and headed back to the castle. He went to where the private baths were.

A wooden barrel tub was being filled with warm water by a female servant.

Lance began removing his armor as he watched the servant put flower petals into the water to make it scented. Do I get more than a wash?

I don’t know what you mean, the servant replied.

He smiled mischievous at her while stepping closer. I wish for more than riches the king provides.

I am only here to set your bath, the servant said nervously and bringing her body more inward.

Lance stared at her amusingly while disrobing. He placed his hand on her cheek. Don’t you think a champion should receive more?

The servant looked down and tighten her lips.

Lance moved her face to force her to look at him. Wash me, would you? I have a hard time cleaning my back.

She stared at him and nodded.

Lance smiled at her, then got into the wooden barrel tub.

The servant cautiously went up to the tub with a cloth and proceeded to wash the champion knight. She tried to reframe from showing her fears and tears.

There. I have done what you asked of me, the servant stated. She started to move away from the tub when Lance grabbed her arm.

Might as well do the front too, Lance told her cheekily.

    She stared worriedly at him.

Lance guided her hand into the water and to his lap.

Her eyes welled up as she quickly looked away. She wanted to resist his grip especially when she felt his swollen member, but feared what he may do if she fought him. She had to follow what he wanted until the act was done and he was satisfied.

Now you may leave, Lance told her.

    The servant hurried away.

After Lance was done in the tub, he pushed water off him as much as he could before putting his undergarments back on. He took his armor to his room in the keep.

Lance dressed more appropriate before heading to the great hall to meet with the Grand Cross and the king.

Ah, good. Come here, Sir Lance, King John said as he gestured to the table.

Lance swiftly made his way to the table where a map was spread out.

You did quite well out there in the tournament, Grand Cross told him.

    Thank you, Lance mentioned.

Can not wait to see how you fare in the battle, Grand Cross proclaimed. You will ride alongside me.

It would be my honor, Grand Cross, Lance stated.

This is the path we were thinking of following to catch the Beverstone off their guard, King John showed.

Going along the outskirt of the woods, they shouldn’t see us coming, Grand Cross stated.

Rest well. You will ride at dawn, King John ordered.

I look forward to it, Lance smiled.

    Chapter 2: Going To Battle

Lance happily got his armor on and sword attached. He made his way to the stable to retrieve his horse, then went to where the other knights were starting to gather.

Sir Lance! Up front! Grand Cross announced.

Lance steered his horse towards the front. He stopped by him.

I expect no surrender, Grand Cross told him.

    Then they must, Lance stated.

Foot soldiers came over to give all the mounted knights lances.

There is no surrendering! We will prevail! Grand Cross shouted, then got his horse to take off running.

    Everyone else followed.

They travelled all through the morning and most of the afternoon until they saw their enemy rushing towards them as well.

They must have had a similar plan to us, Grand Cross proclaimed to his mounted knights. Forward!

The mounted knights got their horses to run faster to them in the hopes that their lances would pierce them first.

This was the moment Lance lived for. The fight. The combat. Taking control of the battle.

His lance stabbed the knight in front of him. As the enemy knight was falling back, he loosen his grip on his own spear. The tip managed to find Lance’s upper inner thigh and stuck into it.

The force caused Lance to fall off his horse. He groaned as he quickly removed the lance.

A foot soldier came toward Lance with his sword drawn and ready to strike. Lance thrusted the spear into the foot soldier, then got up to draw his own sword.

He rushed at another knight that just took down one of his own. Lance swung his sword, but the other knight blocked. The enemy knight quickly swung and hit Lance in the face of his helmet with enough force that caused the helmet to bend at his right eye.

Lance stumbled back and took off his helmet as the enemy knight came rushing at him. He swiftly threw his helmet at him, causing him to stop.

Lance kicked the knight down, then stabbed him under his helmet to his throat.

A foot soldier threw his weight as he slammed into Lance. The champion knight fell hard which caused his left knee to dislocate.

Lance laid there yelling in agony as the food soldier slowly went over him. He held his sword up to thrust it into Lance, when suddenly a sword emerged from his upper chest.

Another knight had prevented the foot soldier from killing Lance. He pushed him to the side and removed his sword. We need you. They are overpowering us.

I can’t move my leg! Lance exclaimed.

The knight held his hand out, then looked around to see more enemy foot soldiers and knights approaching. He looked back at Lance and shook his head before taking off.

Wait! Lance pleaded. He tried to get up but his leg wouldn’t move. He groaned in pain and laid fully back down to catch his breath for a moment.

The opposing side were too focused on the retreating army to notice him.

Lance gathered enough energy to crawl away from the battle and into the cover of the forest. He removed his armor as he kept crawling to help himself better. He kept going until he passed out from exhaustion.

Lance wasn’t found until that night, when a woman stumbled upon his unconscious body.

You look terrible, the woman said to herself. She looked around and thought for a moment. Maybe it would be worth bringing you in. She grabbed his arms and dragged him to her cottage a mile away.

The woman laid him on the bed and stared at him for a minute, wondering if he was going to make it. She then took off his chainmail and placed it on the floor by the foot of the bed. She removed his sword and placed it in the same spot.

After a while, Lance started to open his eyes. He wasn’t fully able to comprehend where he was yet.

Ah, you might make it after all, the woman stated.

    Who...are...you? Lance asked weakly.

Someone who can help, the woman said. I think the fever has come for you.

Lance began drifting back and forth in consciousness.

The woman got a bowl of water and a cloth to place on his forehead to help with the fever. She then noticed the bleeding on his inner upper thigh. She ripped a larger hole in his tights, then ran her finger along the spilling blood, then looked at it. She pressed the blood-stained finger against her tongue. A bit stale. Close to death if I do not stitch you up.

The woman left the bed to gather what she needed to close his wound.

She sat besides him as he continued to drift between awake and sleep. She poured some alcohol over the stab wound before stitching it close.

The woman put everything away and grabbed a blanket to put over him. Until tomorrow.

    Chapter 3: Being Cared For

It was late in the morning when Lance finally came too. He sat up a little and felt the pain of his knee still not fixed. He took off the blanket to see how bad his knee was.

    Hello? Lance called out. Hello!?

    There was silence.

Where am I? he asked himself. He looked around and noticed he had slight swelling around his right eye. He felt it to see a cut from the edge of his eyebrow down to the corner of his eye. He was relieved he could still see out of it.

    Is anybody here!? he yelled.

There was still no response and no windows to look out of either. He thought how strange this person’s hospitality was to not be here when he wakes.

He laid back and waited in discomfort for anyone to show.

Once it was later, the same woman emerged from deeper into the house. Ah, you made it.

Lance propped himself up. Who are you and where am I?

A little attitude. I like it, the woman smiled as she got close.

I have been waiting for someone for hours now. Why didn’t you answer? Lance questioned with hostility.

Sorry, I mustn’t have heard you. I am Lydia by the way.

He glared at her for a moment. Lance.

Pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Lance, Lydia said. I am sure you would feel the same given a different circumstance.

Indeed. Now kindly cure my knee, Lance sternly ordered.

First I must ask. Do you wish for life? Lydia questioned.

Why ask that of me now? Lance inquired irate.

No point in curing you, if you have no desire for it, Lydia replied.

And what sort of man wishes for death? Lance asked. Especially, one asking to be healed.

One who feels they have failed or one who simply can not handle the amount of pain that is endured on them, Lydia responded.

Wouldn’t that be the same thing? Lance asked. There is pain for the man who failed.

Have you endured this pain? Lydia questioned.

I know not of that pain. I have done the best I could out there, Lance stated.

So I ask again. Do you wish for life? Lydia inquired.

Yes, Lance answered. The battle may have been lost, but I am not.

Lydia smiled. She leaned over to hold his dislocated knee. This will hurt for a moment, then feel so much better.

Lance stared with concern at her as he gripped the bed.

Lydia popped his left knee cap back into place. Lance let out a loud groan.

    Much better? Lydia asked.

Lance laid back with his eyes tightly closed as he winced and moaned. Yes.

I bet you are quite hungry, Lydia stated to him, as she made her way to the kitchen at the far side of the cottage.

Aren’t you clever, Lance said sarcastically while sitting up.

I wouldn’t try to walk just yet. Will be a few days before your leg can handle your weight again, Lydia told him.

Are you a healer? Lance questioned as he scooted himself back to sit up against the wall.

For a period of time, I was, Lydia replied. She put water into a pot to place over the fire.

What made you stop? Lance asked.

A better opportunity came to me, Lydia replied happily. She placed two slices of bread in the wire frame and held it over the fire to toast.

You call this better opportunity? Lance questioned with a scoff.

You sound like you were born in nobility, Lydia stated. "Never had to do a thing for yourself. Always someone
