    Chapter 1: Corravern

In the land of Corravern, were four types of dragons. These dragons could turn into humans on a whim and were known as the dragonkind.

In the northwestern of the land were the desert dragonkinds. They lived in the harsh dry desert of The Rocky Flatlands.

They had metallic scales to help reflect the strong sun rays. They had frills to repel the heat and use the sunlight to blind enemies.

The desert dragonkinds could also spit poison that burned their foes.

They were exceptional diggers and could burrow in the sand to move around quicker.

They were nearly the smallest of the dragonkinds with being on all fours and having no wings.

Across the land from them, high in the permanently snowy mountains were the ice dragonkinds.

Their scales were icy blue to match the surroundings. They stood on four legs with wings that resembled crystals.

The ice dragonkinds had two thick horns atop their head with smaller horns on the side of their head. The thickest sharpest horn was on the tip of their nose to break ice or shovel snow out of their way.

They could blow a frigid blast that could freeze nearly anything.

They had spikes like crystals along their backs to the tip of their tail which formed a few bigger crystals. They were also the second biggest of the dragonkinds.

Directly below them to the end of Corravern was the fire dragonkinds. Their surroundings were the complete opposite of the ice dragons. Their home was at the bottom of a volcano, Mount Apex. It bubbled from time to time, but nothing to worry about.

The fire dragonkinds were the biggest of all of them. They breathed fire as their means to attack or roast a good fish.

Their scales were deep red orange color, like the lava that brewed in the volcano. They had no front legs, just massive powerful wings and equally strong hind legs. The back of their wings were charcoal coloring from the years of heat and ash in the air.

They had four small spikes by the tip of the tail and long horns that curved a bit on top of their head. They also had a few spikes down the back of their neck.

The fourth of the dragonkind was located in the center of Corravern. High in the mountains, higher than the ice dragons, were the sky dragonkinds.

They were the slimmest and the most lanky of all of them. They weren’t the smallest nor the biggest of the dragonkinds

Like the fire dragons, the sky dragonkinds had only wings instead of front legs. Unlike the others, they had feathered wings and a long thin tail that separated into three large feathers at the tip. Also different were their feet on their hind legs. They had talons to grip better.

The sky dragonkinds were a dark blue with white underbelly. Their wings were different shades of blue from lightest to darkest.

They could cause whirlwinds to push back or knock others.

There was a forgotten dragonkind. One that all had thought perished around the same time a temple was created for the leaders to come if a crisis happened.

The shadow dragons. They didn’t have the luxury of having a human form like the four others. They were forever in a dragon form.

They stood five and a half feet tall on hind legs with sharp claws. They had blacken claws on their hands, toes, and tip of their snout.

Their skin was a pale yellow and had spikes going down from the top of their head to the tip of the tail.

They only came out at night and could breathe a foggy mist that made it difficult for anyone to see through. They were cave dwellers that had a tunnel system in the mountains that the sky dragonkinds lived and where the temple stood.

They stayed in hiding until they found the right time to reveal themselves once more.

    Chapter 2: Shadow Dragons

The sun had almost fully set when a shadow dragon sat outside a cave opening staring out in the distance. He had a deep scar across his right eye that made it impossible to ever open nor see out of it.

The shadow dragons have made many tunnels throughout the mountains that lay in the middle of Corravern. Though their main tunnel system was that of under the temple.

Another shadow dragon approached the lone one sitting. She had no claws on her hands. Uni, you lost?

In mind and life, Uni replied.

The other sat down by him. Do you still think we are ready?

Is there a time you can confidently say you are ready, Clawless? Uni asked. We are finally of age to fight and show them we are still here and we want retribution.

Is there a plan you have? Clawless asked.

Best to hear with the others, Uni responded. He got up and headed back inside the cave with Clawless following.

There wasn’t many shadow dragons left after their home collapsed, but enough to show the rest of the dragonkinds they were still alive.

The youngest of them with a crooked tail came bounding towards them. Are we to hunt now?

In a moment, Snaky, Uni told him. Everyone, gather.

The ten shadow dragons that now lived together in a tight clutch, came over to give their full attention to Uni.

There wasn’t really a leader amongst them, but Uni being the eldest one of them acted the part. Though he would say it is because he is the loudest and boldest of all.

There has been enough talk about letting the others know what their families have done to ours. Now it is time to show them, Uni announced.

What are you proposing? a shadow dragon with the most scars on him and second eldest, named Scars inquired.

We fight them! Snaky shouted with great relish.

Snaky, we are severely outnumbered, Winks reminded him. She, like Uni could see out of one eye. Her left eye was almost fully closed.

Right, Snaky concurred as he sunk into himself while looking down.

Though that is the right direction, Thrice mentioned. Apart of his right leg was amputated. We may not be able to attack them straight on, but hurt them in some way as they hurt us.

Excellent point, Thrice, Uni stated. I think I may have a grand idea. We first should go back to our destroyed home to clean it up.

What for, Uni? Hornless questioned. Her two horns on her head were ripped off to just the stump.

Thought we swore that place off, Clawless declared.

We need to remind them of what their families have done, Uni proclaimed.

Do you mean to imprison the others? Scars asked.

If only hatchlings survived, then only hatchlings we shall take, Uni stated.

How should we hold them there? Snaky questioned.

They didn’t just build a temple, but a prison as well, Uni replied.

Graveyard more like it, Winks stated.

I watched them. Secretly, Uni announced.

    That’s true, Clawless declared.

The temple was to be a place to worship, gather for important things, and to imprison those that go against them, Uni shared.

Then we use that for them, Scars said.

We leave now and see what they had instore, Uni stated.

What of food? I am starved, Snaky questioned.

Find something on the way, Uni told him.

The others started to follow Uni out of the cave.

I will help you, Winks told him.

Snaky looked at her with a smile.

    Chapter 3: The Rocky Flatlands

In the large desert of The Rocky Flatlands resides the town of Scorpionhallow, home to the desert dragonkinds. There was a group of them that rather travel around the desert than live in one location.

Scorpionhallow was a lively town with a saloon that knew no closing time. There was always someone drinking or playing card or dice games.

There was a hoedown at least once a month for no other reason than to have a hoedown.

Nearly weekly, the male desert dragons like to taunt and ride to see how long one could last on the wild beast that roamed freely. It looked very similar to that of a giant anteater, but big enough to ride. They had an elongated snout that would open to reveal very sharp teeth. They had long claws to dig up the relatively big grubs that hide beneath the sand. They had thick curvy horns that made it easy to hold on as they thrashed about. Their tail was wide and flat as they held it up to give cover to their young when traveling.

The female desert dragonkinds and sometimes the humans of the town would come and watch. They would cheer the men riding the sand grubeaters.

Rebekah Lewden, the wife of the sheriff loved watching her husband and son partake in the game. She always cheered the loudest.

Her son’s twin, Olivia, watched in distain. She never liked the idea that only the men could do the riding and taunting. Anytime she protested they would simply remind her how dangerous it was.

The women did however have their own game that was just as equally entertaining to watch for the town. Just wasn’t done as often and only single young women played and had a version for the men.

It was Olivia’s twin brother’s turn on a sand grubeater.

Ya got this, Owen! Rebekah shouted.

The sand grubeaters were not scared off easily with loud noises for the town of Scorpionhallow were not silent. They were too heavy for long fights with the dragonkind who was trying to jump on them. Unless babies were with them.

Owen approached one who stared him down and bellowed into the night.

The one his father was just on snarled and scratched at the ground in protest of being ridden on.

Owen rushed at the beast, who lowered its head while shaking it from side to side. He grabbed the horns and the beast lifted its head sending Owen hard on his back, but he was still on the creature.

The folks watching gasped, then cheered to see he was still on the beast.

Owen quickly grinned at the crowd before turning himself around.

The sand grubeater started kicking its hind legs a little in the air before trotting around. It grunted loudly as it thrashed it head to loosen Owen’s grip.

Owen moved to sit more on the creature’s shoulder and back of neck. He held the thick curved horns tightly as the sand grubeater lurched forward by going down on its front legs. This was where most would fall forward and off the beast.

Owen went forward, but held on and kept a hold.

The sand grubeater snorted and fell to its side, then got back up. It trotted away to join its herd riderless.

Owen laid there laughing from the adrenaline coursing through him.

Rebekah rushed over to make sure he was okay.

Clement, their father, outstretched his hand to help him up. Ya goin’ be the best in no time.

Owen beamed at him as he took his hand. Can I get an oh-be-joyful?

    Clement chuckled.

    Nohow, Owen, Rebekah answered.

Owen scoffed. Everyone wet their whistles! Why can’t I?

It’s nigh unto your birthday, Rebekah replied. Not long to wait now.

Ya’s sister don’t complain ‘bout it, Clement stated.

I save it for wantin’ to ride one of ‘em, Olivia proclaimed.

    Nary, nohow, Clement stated.

Just for us men, Owen teasingly said.

Ya goin’ to try ya’s luck with the lasso game tomorrow night, Clement told her.

Can’t wait to see who catches ya, sis, Owen declared as he put his arm around her.

Everyone headed back to their town that was a mile away.

Yeah right, Olivia mentioned with a slight chuckle.

They all headed to the saloon.

Olivia and Owen went to sit at a table in the back as the saloon filled up quickly.

Rebekah met up with the women on one side of the large open spaced saloon while Clement went straight to the counter like many others.

Sheriff! Don’t ya think it ‘bout time ya’s hatchlings get to wet their whistles? a drunken patron questioned while standing behind Owen as he wrapped his arms around the teenager with his mug to Owen’s mouth.

Owen looked over at Olivia with a mischievous smile, then tried to sip the beer.

Olivia tried to reframe from laughing as she whispered for him to stop.

Clement pulled out his pistol and aimed it at the patron. Williams, do not dare tell me how to parent my hatchlings.

    Williams straighten
