    CHAPTER ONE

THE POWER OF FASTING AND PRAYER FOR INSTANT ANSWER

Fasting and prayer are super spiritual tools and a means to seek the face of God for answer to the challenges of life. Fasting is a spiritual discipline, while prayer communicates our needs to God. Fasting comes for different reasons which we shall discuss fully in a different chapter of this book. Fasting and prayer are not what we jump into; it has strong roots in the Bible. The Holy Spirit plays good role in fasting and prayer. He transforms our life and builds strength in us.

Fasting connotes abstinence from water, food or certain types of food for a period of time. The purpose of fasting is to make one grow spiritually. Fasting time and period is determined by circumstances and situations, as at the time we fast. You don’t force people to fast, situation does, time does and personal conviction does as well. The best way to fast is not to eat for a time of the day or days, earmarked for fasting. You shouldn’t eat and pray, and call it fast.

Prayer and fasting are two edge sword approaches to spiritualism to seek the face of God for instant answer. Fasting makes you humble to pray and behave, while prayer accelerates your hunger to see the face of God with assurance of getting answer.

Fasting is not mandatory for the sick, the old, and or, pregnant women. Your body matters in fasting. There are peculiar cases of sickness that needs fasting. Some critical situations need dry fasting, if you need answer to your challenges. When the disciples asked Jesus, why, they couldn’t cast out the demon that ravaged the epileptic man. Jesus answered, through prayer and fasting. This means there are situations that need fasting and prayer to heal. Do not forget, Jesus went for 40 days and 40 night’s prayer and fasting before he started his ministry. This teaches us that, the fasting and prayer we do today continually works. The rule is, run from sin. If you fast and pray for 3 days, 10 days, 15 days, 20 days, 30 days, or 40 days, and you go into sin, mostly immorality or social or religious vices, you will be demoted in the spirit realm and will be purged of powers. So be warned!

Fasting and prayer is recognized both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. Fasting and prayer is not new to God. We have people that fast in the Old Testament and in the New Testament which changed cause of events. We don’t fast, for fasting sake, we do it when we want to be close to God and have spiritual vitamins. In the Old Testament, God commanded Israel to observe several designated types of fasting while some people choose to fast for one reason or the other. In the New Testament, believers fasting were neither commanded nor forbidden. The fasting and prayer arise as situation unfolds.

Jesus did not emphasize fasting and prayer when he was with his disciples. But he makes them to understand that when he is no more with them, fasting and prayer will be necessary. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast." Luke 5:35.

From time immemorial, fasting is a tool that is widely used by God’s people in history, and continues to be a powerful way for Christians to deepen their relationship with God. Whenever we need something or know we live unrighteous, we go before God in prayer and fasting to seek the face of God. But note this; you can’t continue in sin and expect the grace of God. Never!

Fasting is a spiritual vitamin that builds us, give us strength and empower us to face forces of darkness that rise up against us. Jesus makes us to understand that fasting should be a continuous process. In the book of Mathew 6:16, he said, When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. This is fasting propaganda, not spiritual. You have gotten your reward-praise from men. This is common with Muslims. They greet themselves, Well done for the fast Eku awe, in Yoruba Language. This is self-praise. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in the secret, will reward you Mathew 6:17-18. There must be maturity in fasting and prayer.

Let’s go back to Jesus instruction. The Lord Jesus says, When you fast, not If you fast. When you fast means it is continuous and shall be a regular practice, to his followers and we that believe in him. Fasting is a spiritual walk of obedience with God.

Fasting is important in Christian life. It is good we know the meaning of fasting and prayer. Prayer generally means a communication between God and men. Prayer is when you make petition to God for answer. It is a man’s weapon of war to the devil and his cohorts. Prayer is like a threshing machine against any mountain. Prayer is free for us to use. You don’t pay for it; it is available all the time. Make use of it, every time and every hour. Be prayer-hungry and support it with fasting. So what is fasting?

The definition of fasting is broad. Fasting means the followings among others:

    1.      Fasting means abstaining from food, water, drinks or anything that serves as nutrient to the body for a period you fast and seek the face of God.

    2.      Fasting means sacrificing what you value to pray to God and not put such in mind during fasting.

    3.      Fasting means leaving pleasures of the world and fully focuses on Christ by doing away with food.

    4.      Fasting means seeking the Kingdom first and later pursue other things of the world that promote life.

    5.      Fasting is denying you of this world and focus on heaven.

    6.      Fasting is the crusade of putting God’s eternal purpose before temporal desires that fades with time.

    7.      Fasting means to purge you of worldly affairs, but build time, energy and resources to worship God.

    8.      Fasting means acts of disassociate and disconnect with the world and build deep connection with God.

    9.      Fasting means bowing to God in repentance and releases self to Him rather than the world.

    10.      Fasting means to set you aside from the crowded world and focus on God.

    11.      Fasting is a means to promote in the kingdom above powers and principalities.

There are six major types of fasting. They are summarized for easy understanding in the following headings:

    1.      Regular Fast: A regular fast is when you abstain from all food and drink except for water. You drink water when thirsty to receive temporary strength.

    2.      Partial Fast: This is a fast where you eat a particular type of food. Daniel in Babylon ate no choice food; no meat touched his lips. In others, it may mean abstaining from one particular meal each day of the fast.

    3.      Absolute Fast: Absolute fast is abstaining from food and drinks. This fast shouldn’t be a long day fast. It is dangerous because it may affect your esophagus. Throat passage should be kept wet by drinking water. If you don’t drink water, your throat passage becomes dry and dangerous to eat when you break the fast. Be warned; drink water!

    4.      Supernatural fast: Supernatural fast entails long fast without eating or drink water or any liquid. It is called supernatural because ordinary men hardly survive it, except with hands of God in it. Moses went into 40 days fasting without food or water, when he climbed the mountain of Sinai to collect the Ten Commandments.

    5.      Fast from sex. This fast is good, if both parties (spouse) agree. There is no sex this period
