THE STORY OF
LOOKING FORWARD
Discovering the Art of Dying Well
The author and her family were totally unprepared for the terminal diagnosis of their beloved mother and grandmother in 1981. The last year together contained moments of gratitude and much preventable suffering. Questions were triggered: Is there such a thing as dying well? Are there ways to prepare for that? Looking Forward is an accessible, encouraging set of stories about the author’s quest for answers and those who offered insight, guidance, and support. A handy booklist and reflection questions are included to stimulate your own exploration of this important topic.
APPRECIATION FOR
LOOKING FORWARD
Congratulations and hooray for your work on the topic of dying and writing about it in such an accessible way. Sharing it with others is a gift. You have given me things to think about, to ponder, and to share with family.
Allie Stickney, CEO (retired), Wake Robin Retirement Community, Shelburne, Vermont.
I hope Looking Forward will be widely distributed; it is a short read with veins of gold. It is upbeat and written with humility. Most approaches to death planning are disease-focused. Looking Forward applies to everyone in every situation.
Zail S. Berry, MD, MPH, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Physician, Burlington, VT
The easy-to-read format is carried along by your interesting story. It is all there, in just a few pages! I plan to share a Blue Book of my own with my children and encourage them to create one of their own.
Barbara Werle, Hospice Nurse, Shelburne, Vermont.
I began reading it with my pastor hat on, but quickly placed my parent and son hat on top of that! My wife’s mother is in hospice care now. Three of our four parents have chronic and terminal diagnoses. Thank you for your clear, concise, personal, and practical guide.
Rev. Kevin Goldenbogen, Senior Pastor, Charlotte Congregational Church, Charlotte, Vermont
Looking Forward is a beautiful, informative, thought-provoking, and insightful gift to people of all ages (including me)! You put into words what many of us struggle to know how to approach, and you do so in a way that is both practical and comforting. WONDERFUL! I have many people I would like to share this with already. It is invaluable, inviting, encouraging, and empowering! Such a beautiful contribution.
Marilee J. Aronson, Licensed Clinical Psychiatrist, Washington DC
Looking Forward is an impressive and beautiful book. It’s concise and
