The Between of Things - Jeff C. Whitaker
Preface
The Between of Things is an ode to the times we often forget and overlook. The marathon of the middle
is inevitable. Periods of waiting, adjustment, revision, breaking and strengthening habits, saying goodbye
to old and hello
to new, rehabilitation, rest - we all go through these times. It’s necessary when inspiration, motivation, nor talent can save you. Discipline, patience and maybe a bit of insanity can get you to the finish line.
In the end, you’ll be in the between of things, en route to your next end, where the relatively long, often grueling grind continues.
Prologue
Everything I write is for myself or a specific person in mind. Sometimes I write things I needed to get off my mind and into the recycling bin, for the world to repurpose. The Pandemic provided more than some time to get things off my mind but not enough time to have some of the heart-to-heart conversations I wanted to have most.
In The Between of Things, I am finishing some projects and previewing the beginning of new projects, that I kept on my mind and in my mouth more than off my chest and onto paper. Inspiration is the understood blessing of the ability and freedom to do so; you never know what could happen.
Share your work and keep your promises - to God and most importantly, yourself.
The Between of Things
From focusing on the last without appreciating the first, to chasing the feeling of the first while telling yourself This has to be my last.
Then realizing last
is the discipline after that decision and worrying about going back and not having enough mental fortitude to see that it wasn’t there to start.
The times when underthinking your actions never undermined your value, to the first time you Fell off,
not knowing it was necessary to readjust your perspective before a better come-up.
The between of things - where it’s not clear at the moment that this is the best or worst situation you’ve ever been in depending, again, on your decisions and discipline.
After realizing you are just getting started and learning there will be hundreds, thousands, maybe millions more firsts to come; and though looking back seems like a good idea - informing your future - the universe, not so subtly, reminds you that the present is the only thing to focus on.
I hope you learn the value of balance before the universe shows you how extreme things can get in the margins. I wish for more wisdom than knowledge in all the times you reach these various peaks and valleys.
Smooth sailing generally involves a longer route, and skipping steps is the easiest way to build a bunch of momentum before a more volatile crash when you inevitably trip up on something you didn't realize you had, in fact, skipped. But, see, like paper cuts, it stings much more than it should - that’s why it’s crucial to not take shortcuts; just because you can, at least.
We all should work smarter; that doesn’t mean you won’t have to work hard at some point.
I hope you learn to measure as many times as you need - daily is the bare minimum for me - because you are only competing with yourself, first and last. When you choose to enter a comparative competition, I hope all your competition is fierce, because you will lose on the journey once, twice, or more. Though it may hurt, you know the value of your work. No one brings up the losers in a weak fight. Unfortunately, we look down on the winners
of soft battles all the time in Western
society.
Speaking of western society: we have to win
everything - except at peace and then talk bad about the middle east.
