THE INITIATION

Thus began my career as a recruiter for the secret society of horny, rich people, aka The Union. During the rest of our stay in Barbados, April filled me in on the many peculiarities of this most extraordinary of cabals.

The Union was organized in the shape of a pyramid, the collaborators - us - being at the bottom steps, while the members made up the upper echelons of the scheme. We, the plebs, didn't really know the true hierarchy of the club, or who it was at the very top of the pyramid. But we knew there was a Board, which sanctioned the new members and collaborators and made the executive decisions regarding the functioning of the Union.

The Union was, therefore, a sort of PR-driven-by-sex vehicle, its implicit purpose being creating a business/ friends-with-benefits network for its numerous members. The Union was profitable for all parties involved, both hedonistically and financially. The members earned by making profitable business arrangements between themselves, while the collaborators - us - would receive a commission out of every contribution by the new members.

There was, of course, a catch. The collaborators vouched for the people they brought in. If, by any chance, the member they brought in proved unfit, or his actions were considered unworthy of being a part of the Union, the commission would have to be paid back. Each collaborator was allowed one single such a transgression. If it happened twice, he would be laid off, permanently.

There was another catch, even more important. The Union had to make sure of the utmost discretion of its members and collaborators, even the ones, or, rather, especially the ones who get laid off. This is where the Initiation comes into play.

Every new potential member and collaborator has to get through some sort of ritual. April was rather coy about what happens during the Initiation, but she let slip the fact that what happens there is pretty wild and everything is recorded.

Should there be a problem with the respective member or collaborator, the recordings are then put to use to discredit his or her claims, together with a smear campaign that would terminate the person, socially and professionally.

There were such cases in the past, and you are certain to have read or heard about some of them. If some people’s sudden fall from grace ever seems inexplicable, bear in mind that he or she or they might just be banished members from the Union who failed to observe the code of silence.
