Mastering the Art of Mindfulness - Gerald Gallagher

    INTRODUCTION

Life seems very black and white to many people. They get up every morning worried about making the wrong decisions. They stress about which milk to put in their coffee, which road to take to work, and which coworkers they should acknowledge when they enter the building. People like this have their lives revolving around every decision they have to make and not the opposite way around. Instead of living despite a supposed ‘wrong’ decision that they have made, they do everything in their power to prevent wrongful decisions in the first place. This may seem effective in the sense that they are clearly trying to ensure that their life only gets better from here on out. However, they fail to realize that they will never get back the time they spend worrying over whether a choice is right or wrong. There exists one simple fact about life, and it is that it will always be unpredictable.

To try and predict the outcome of every decision we make and worry about what is lurking behind each upcoming twist and turn is simply a waste of time. While we are out there worried about what awaits us and how to make sure that it is favorable to us, we let life pass us by. We get so worried about the surprises waiting for us at each turn that we rather not make those turns at all. When we worry too much, we can only ask ourselves what even is the point? After all, life will do what it wants with us. Sometimes that will help us, and sometimes it will definitely hurt us. The only thing up to us is how we want to handle all of its surprises.

As society progresses and discovers new sources of entertainment, a new social media for us to share too much personal information on, and endless amounts of new technological gadgets, people get inadvertently put on the back burner. Whether you think technological advancements are helping or hurting society does not change the fact that there are both pros and cons to these developments. With modern advertisement strategies, it is virtually impossible for a person to stay untouched by targeted ads and companies wanting to get their hands on their money. This is another fact of life: if we choose to stay a part of society and not fall off the grid completely, we have to learn to assimilate. We only have to be careful to not lose ourselves in the madness of modern society. Now more than ever, younger generations are facing economic and climatic issues and are being forced to plan for their futures earlier than any generation before them. If they do not start planning out their personal finances at an alarmingly young age, they are told they will have problems affording all of their necessities in the future. In one word, the world’s future is quite chaotic, and if you think about it for too long, your mind will begin to house that chaos as well.

This is what we have gotten far too used to: absorbing society’s issues, expectations, and standards of life and allowing them to derail who we truly are. Only a sliver of the modern population is actually in touch with themselves and their minds because so many of us can’t afford to. When can we really be expected to do so if we have been convinced that in order to be productive we must pack our day to the very brim; every second we spend living without gaining money is a second wasted. There is no more time left for us to dream of things we want if we do not have the financial means to afford it. Everything nowadays revolves around the bitter truth that the world does not turn in most of our favors. We have to make our own worlds turn, and the only way to do that apparently is to keep working, keep grinding, and keep conforming.

We’ve been taught to neglect a very important part of ourselves. It’s not the drive that pushes us to go after our goals or the strategic parts of our brain that help us solve work problems but the very human aspect of ourselves: our minds. Yes, we are encouraged to go to school and get education, and we certainly are praised for our informational prowess if we have it. However, our minds are capable and meant for much more than just solving basic work issues. They are meant to serve as our peace. The world was never truly calm; throughout history, our ancestors have witnessed so much atrocity they certainly did not have it any easier. However, society’s relationship with things like inner peace and harmony has changed drastically. Nowadays, it is extremely rare to find people who value their minds more than their money. They are not to blame, of course, as this is what an ever-changing, constantly under improvement society does to us. It teaches us that nothing is ever good enough—we must go after more.

The choice to value our minds as our most prized possessions is in the hands of each of us. Thankfully, the cages society has placed on most of us are not inescapable. It just takes some determination and clarity to realize just how worth the effort of nourishing our minds is.

    Chapter 1 :

    Our Relationship With Life

The way we see life is a direct reflection of how we see ourselves. You will not see a person who hates themselves be absolutely in love with the idea of life. And vice versa, if someone loves themselves for who they are, they will not see life as a drab, pointless venture. Everyone makes of the world what they feel within themselves. As different as we believe our inner and outer worlds to be, they are actually deeply interconnected.

Every person experiences life differently. We are each born in a different place, with a unique family, and a very personal series of events to guide us as we get older. No one will see the world the same way, and we certainly will not live it as such. There is both beauty and confusion in this fact. At times, we may feel lost and want to seek advice from someone only to realize that their suggestions are not applicable to us. If you lose your job, for example, one person might encourage you to jump right back in and start looking for another one, while a second individual will suggest you take a good month off and go backpacking through Europe. Who are we to say that one of these people is right and the other is wrong?

That is because there is no right and wrong answer. Each answer is a perfectly good option except one is perhaps more suitable to the life of the person who just lost their job. Going on a backpacking trip might seem outlandish to them if they have a family to feed and a debt to settle, but for the person that suggested that solution, a backpacking trip seems like exactly what is needed after suffering a loss. Although there is no objectively wrong answer to this issue, we have to look out for one thing, and that is making a choice out of alignment versus out of a sense of pressure.

Society has managed to embed itself into every crevice of our lives. Its standards, expectations, lessons, and judgments can be felt in nearly every decision we are ever faced with. If we are not strong enough to withstand them, we can end up doing things that will only hurt us in the future.

Let us assume that the person who just lost their job chooses to go instantly after another one on
