PREFACE
Was hitting rock bottom the best thing that could have ever happened to me?
In 2021 I was married, had two kids, and was working for Apple as a recruitment specialist. It was a good job but not fulfilling. Fast forward to 2022 and I am divorced and working as a full-time mindset and book coach, which I love.
What happened, you wonder? Well, let’s start at the beginning...
MY TEACHER SAID, SHE WILL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING.
I grew up in Germany.
When I was growing up, we received grades from Year 1 onwards. The grades determined which secondary school you would attend after Year 4. I went to middle school, but my grades were terrible.
I really struggled in school because I just couldn’t remember anything. Even when I reviewed it for hours, I just couldn’t remember it. I was bullied at school and my self-esteem was zero.
I always felt like the odd one out. My family always said: "Why can’t you just be like everyone else?"
One of the things I remember from school was the embarrassment and shame I felt when I didn’t know the answer to a question that the teacher asked me and the whole class was laughing or talking behind my back.
I remember the day my father was invited to come to school by the headmaster. My grades were bad, my confidence was low, and my future was looking bleak.
The headmaster basically told my dad that I will be lucky if I finish Year 10 and that they are very disappointed by my lack of progress. My dad didn’t speak much, he listened. I cried. He saw this as opportunity to put me down even more. There you go, the only thing she can do is cry.
The rest I can’t remember but I managed to finish Year 10.
I think that’s where my belief of not being good enough
came from. Not good enough in school and not good enough as a daughter.
My parents found a tutor for me, but it didn’t make a huge difference because I struggled so much to retain any information. It would have been better if I’d had the tutor in Year 4 or 5 while I was learning the basics.
I felt like I couldn’t talk to my parents about it. As a matter of fact, I felt like I couldn’t speak to anyone about it.
My parents asked me how school was, but they didn’t really have the time to listen or ask more specific questions to help me through these feelings.
The boys liked me, and I liked hanging out with them. That way at least someone was interested in me and paid attention to me. Not until much later did I realise that I was craving attention from others because I never had it at home.
For years I had these limiting beliefs about not being clever enough, not being good enough, not amounting to anything.
Think back to your own childhood. How was your own behaviour affected by what someone else said about you? Can you think of a belief that you have been carrying around with you for years? Is it really true?
What are some positive beliefs you have?
What would your life look like if you would let go of negative beliefs? Write down the opposite of your negative beliefs.
Your beliefs can be changed and turned around. Keep saying or writing down the positive belief until you believe it, a powerful statement that you can repeat to yourself at various times of the day. It will help you develop your positive self-talk and can have a big impact upon your behaviour and achievements.
HAPPY MEMORIES
Recently I was thinking back to my childhood and what made me happy.
I remember spending time with my friends
