Hi, my name is Harper Johnson, but everyone calls me Harp, Kittie (a nickname given to me by my late great-grandma) or H.P. I was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia but I currently reside in Dallas, Texas. I’m 29 years old. Yes! Twenty-nine! But it feels like I’m twice my age. I’m not sure if that’s the maturity in me or if that’s because I’ve been through so much already. From failing school, changing careers, losing loved ones, battling depression, self-esteem issues and let’s not forget failed relationships. Have you ever felt like you were too old to not have it all together but at the same time you were too young to have it all together? That’s how I’ve felt. Trying to plan your life out but it doesn’t always go as planned? Yes, I’ve been t here too.

When I was in elementary school, my teachers would give me old tests, old lesson plans and any extra papers that weren’t being used and I would collect them and play teachers with it. I always thought I would be a teacher, specifically a 5th grade math teacher because I was so good at math. Funny how things change. My sophomore year of high school I became a certified nurse assistant so my passion for nursing took off from there. You see, life doesn’t always go as planned. People say enjoy your twenties, but in my opinion, your twenties can be a stressful time period because you are still trying to find your way in this thing called life.

After I graduated high school in 2011, I attended Columbus Technical College. I knew that I wanted to continue my nursing career, so I started taking the prerequisite courses that were necessary for the practical nursing program. A year after that, I received my acceptance letter and started the program. Nursing school wasn’t easy. It was intense. I had to remain focused 24/7. There was no time to lack. I felt like I no longer had a life, a social life. I was 20 years old, wishing I was picking out my outfit for the party that Friday night. Instead, I was studying the steps on how to insert a nasogastric tube because I had a practicum the following Monday. I felt like I should have been living life and enjoying my 20’s, but I was enrolled in that program, so I had to remain focused. And although all I did was focus throughout my high school years, it was what I had to continue to do. I never quite experienced the fun life. But I had to push through.
