머리말

저자 소개

제임스 매슈 배리(James Matthew Barrie, 1860년~1937년)는 ‘피터팬’인물을 창조한 것으로 가장 잘 알려진 스코틀랜드의 극작가이자 소설가이다. 직조공의 열 남매 중 아홉째로 태어났으며, 에든버러 대학을 나온 후 극작가가 되기 위해서 런던으로 이사해서 기자생활을 시작했다.

하늘을 나는, 절대 늙지 않는 그 장난꾸러기 소년은 1902년 배리의 소설 ‘조그만 흰 새(The Little White Bird)’에 소개된 이후로, 1904년에는 연극으로, 1911년에는 소설 ‘피터와 웬디(Peter and Wendy)’에 등장했다. 월트 디즈니사(Walt Disney)는 1953년에 ‘피터팬’을 애니메이션으로 만든 이후, 지금까지 전 세계에 널리 사랑받고 있다.

그는 1937년에 폐렴으로 세상을 떠났으며, ‘피터팬’ 관련 저작권을 런던의 어린이 병원에 넘겼다.

역자 소개

김명수는 서강대학교 전자공학과를 졸업(학사)하고, 아주대학교 시스템공학과를 졸업(석사)하였으며, 영국 London Teacher Training College TESOL을 취득하였다.

대우 그룹에서 전자·소프트웨어 개발, 기획, 컨설팅 업무를 수행하였고, 순천제일대학교에서 교수로 재직하였다. 현재는 전문번역가로 활동 중이다.

All children, except one, grow up.

One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother.

This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up.

Mrs. Darling was married in white, and at first she kept the books perfectly, almost gleefully, as if it were a game, not so much as a Brussels sprout was missing;

As they were poor, owing to the amount of milk the children drank, this nurse was a prim Newfoundland dog, called Nana, who had belonged to no one in particular until the Darlings engaged her.

She had always thought children important, however, and the Darlings had become acquainted with her in Kensington Gardens, where she spent most of her spare time peeping into perambulators, and was much hated by careless nursemaids, whom she followed to their homes and complained of to their mistresses.
