About this ebook

#1 We want to thank the families who have so willingly shared their stories and lives with us. We also thank our colleagues who have shared their insights and wisdom with us and who have greatly enriched our work.

#2 The traditional approach to diagnosing and treating at-risk children is piecemeal and disconnected. Too often, parents and experts look at behavioral disorders as if they exist separate from sensory impairments, attention difficulties, early childhood deprivation, and more.

#3 The key to helping your child overcome the effects of harm is to treat the whole child, with all their interrelated needs, not just one small aspect of behavior or illness. By providing this healing environment, you can help your child overcome a legacy of maltreatment and become an effective healer for your own child.

#4 Coaching and parenting an at-risk child is multidisciplinary and ongoing. It involves building emotional intelligence as well as intellectual mastery. It supports your child’s senses and physiology along with his psychology.

Summary of Karyn B. Purvis, David R. Cross & Wendy Lyons Sunshine's The Connected Child - IRB Media

    Insights from Chapter 1

    #1

We want to thank the families who have so willingly shared their stories and lives with us. We also thank our colleagues who have shared their insights and wisdom with us and who have greatly enriched our work.

    #2

The traditional approach to diagnosing and treating at-risk children is piecemeal and disconnected. Too often, parents and experts look at behavioral disorders as if they exist separate from sensory impairments, attention difficulties, early childhood deprivation, and more.

    #3

The key to helping your child overcome the effects of harm is to treat the whole child, with all their interrelated needs, not just one small aspect of behavior or illness. By providing this healing environment, you can help your child overcome a legacy of maltreatment and become an effective healer for your own child.

    #4

Coaching and parenting an at-risk child is multidisciplinary and ongoing. It involves building emotional intelligence as well as intellectual mastery. It supports your child’s senses and physiology along with his psychology.

    #5

Compassion helps us understand and accept a child’s deep neediness, and to be forgiving when they don’t understand something that seems so basic, like how to sit at a dining table with a family.

    #6

You have the opportunity to change the relationship your at-risk child has with the world. You can do this by building a bridge to the world for your at-risk children. You can do this by calmly and firmly interrupting their bad behavior, and then praising them when they do the right thing.

    #7

Observe your child's body language to see if you can spot any signs of fear, sensory processing dysfunction, or undiagnosed seizure activity. Then, use your observations to help you understand what your child needs and why they are acting the way they are.

    #8

Adopted and foster children often have suboptimal brain chemistry, and this can remain true even after they have lived in an adoptive home for many years. By helping a child feel safer, less stressed, and more equipped to successfully navigate the world, you can improve his brain health.

    #9

Medication is not always effective, and can even make the symptoms of the disorder worse. It is important to have a knowledgeable pharmacist or medical doctor review the list of drugs your child is being given.

    #10

Talk therapies are typically not effective with children who have suffered sensory processing delays and attachment disorders. Instead, hands-on playful activities such as drawing or puppet shows can be more appropriate vehicles of communication for these kids.

    #11

It is important to choose specialists and professionals who encourage parental participation and who will train you in supplemental methods that you can incorporate into your home environment. Children with multifaceted impairments cannot be effectively healed in a single weekly session.

    #12

Play is a great way to teach and learn with children. It is shared joy, and your child will learn best when
