About this ebook

Readers will be surprised at just how much they do not understand their own emotions.

Using standard language and invoking evidence-based research sources, this book presents an informational guide to managing emotions, overcoming negativity, anxiety, stress, depression, and anger.

All emotions should be expressed safely. Bottling up emotions will only increase the risk of an emotional outburst, as they are a form of energy that must be safely dissipated.

It's interesting how common things, such as emotions, can become so complex to describe. There is so much depth to emotions and how we understand them that so many of us have only scratched the surface.

This book departs from the common approach of understanding and managing emotions and instead reports on reputable psychologists' projects and other scientific sources to discuss the following topics:

  • Do you dominate your emotions or do you let them dominate you?
  • Most common emotions
  • External factors influencing emotions
  • Change the emotions that are bad for you
  • What are paradigms and how do they affect emotions?

Most people assume that they understand themselves, but in reality, they don't, as they tend to simply shield themselves from the things that threaten their self-preservation. Through this book, the reader will be gradually taken through the steps of attaining self-awareness and self-regulation.

The book introduces the reader to:

  • How to change paradigms
  • How to recognize the emotional state of others
  • How daily habits can affect your emotions
  • How to condition your mind for better emotions
  • How changing emotions can improve your health and interpersonal relationships
  • How good emotions can guide you to financial, emotional, and personal success
  • How to change the emotions of anger and stress
  • Meditation as art to generate positive emotions
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Mental exercises to regularly practice controlling your emotions and changing your bad emotional habits

Ultimately, if you feel that your life is full of negative emotions due to family problems, a job you don't like, a difficult relationship, or anything else, know that in this book you will find lots of useful tips and food for thought to make a real change.

Correspondingly, the book goes further to show the link between emotions and subconscious. It is imperative to explore external factors that impact emotions such as environment and people and this was illustrated. The book also covers ways of adjusting emotions that are bad for you as well as the paradigms and how they impact emotions. Chapter 1: Understanding Emotions

    What Emotions Are

Sandra Hockenbury and Don Hockenbury, define an emotion as a concept that captures the personal experience, complex mental state, behavioral response, and the physiological response of the mind. Aside from defining what constitutes emotions, scholars have attempted to identify and categorize the various types of emotions. Some of the highlights on what constitutes emotions include:

    •  Psychologist Paul Eckman in 1972 asserted that there are six fundamental emotions that are universal throughout human cultures. The said emotions are anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness, and surprise.

    •  Psychologist Paul Eckman expanded the fundamental emotions list in 1999 to include shame, embarrassment, satisfaction, amusement, pride, and shame.

    Three Key Elements of Emotions

The three elements of emotions are behavioral response, subjective experience, and physiological response. The following is a detailed discussion of the three primary elements of emotions.

    •  The subjective experience

Under this view, individuals react to emotions in a personalized manner even though the emotions are universal. For example, when you feel upset, the way you react to the emotion will differ from the way your colleague reacts. The effect of reacting to each emotion in a personalized way is because of other influences on emotions. For instance, the resilience levels vary per person. Additionally, the environment also impacts on the way we react to emotions. Think of how you react to bad news in public and when alone at home. It is necessary to review how one reacts to emotions using a subjective view.

In detail, there are various aspects of an emotion that impacts the way we respond to it. For instance, the same emotion can have different intensity. An example may be where you feel happy but the degree of happiness will differ per person in the audience. There is a possibility that an individual that has been enjoying positive emotions for the entire week not to feel the happiness being felt by others as intense. On the other hand, an individual that has been disappointed all along the week may find the happiness being felt by others as highly intense. The reaction to the emotion, in this case, will vary due to the intensity of the emotion felt individually.

Expectedly, the environment also affects emotion. When one is in a supportive environment, he or she may safely process a negative emotion compared to being in an insensitive environment. When one receives bad news, the person in a supportive environment may recover fast enough compared to the person in a strenuous environment. Adjusting each of these environments to the extreme will yield a different emotional reaction. In this case, the emotion is being felt subjectively due to the environmental factor.

Lastly, the varying reaction to an emotion by each person is also determined by the physiological state of the person. An individual that did not get adequate quality sleep may be highly irritable compared to an individual that got adequate quality sleep. Even though all of these individuals face the emotion of disappointment, the person that did not get the requisite amount of sleep is likely to feel the intensity of disappointment to be high and react
