Chapter 1: Understanding Emotions
What Emotions Are
Sandra Hockenbury and Don Hockenbury, define an emotion as a concept that captures the personal experience, complex mental state, behavioral response, and the physiological response of the mind. Aside from defining what constitutes emotions, scholars have attempted to identify and categorize the various types of emotions. Some of the highlights on what constitutes emotions include:
• Psychologist Paul Eckman in 1972 asserted that there are six fundamental emotions that are universal throughout human cultures. The said emotions are anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness, and surprise.
• Psychologist Paul Eckman expanded the fundamental emotions list in 1999 to include shame, embarrassment, satisfaction, amusement, pride, and shame.
Three Key Elements of Emotions
The three elements of emotions are behavioral response, subjective experience, and physiological response. The following is a detailed discussion of the three primary elements of emotions.
• The subjective experience
Under this view, individuals react to emotions in a personalized manner even though the emotions are universal. For example, when you feel upset, the way you react to the emotion will differ from the way your colleague reacts. The effect of reacting to each emotion in a personalized way is because of other influences on emotions. For instance, the resilience levels vary per person. Additionally, the environment also impacts on the way we react to emotions. Think of how you react to bad news in public and when alone at home. It is necessary to review how one reacts to emotions using a subjective view.
In detail, there are various aspects of an emotion that impacts the way we respond to it. For instance, the same emotion can have different intensity. An example may be where you feel happy but the degree of happiness will differ per person in the audience. There is a possibility that an individual that has been enjoying positive emotions for the entire week not to feel the happiness being felt by others as intense. On the other hand, an individual that has been disappointed all along the week may find the happiness being felt by others as highly intense. The reaction to the emotion, in this case, will vary due to the intensity of the emotion felt individually.
Expectedly, the environment also affects emotion. When one is in a supportive environment, he or she may safely process a negative emotion compared to being in an insensitive environment. When one receives bad news, the person in a supportive environment may recover fast enough compared to the person in a strenuous environment. Adjusting each of these environments to the extreme will yield a different emotional reaction. In this case, the emotion is being felt subjectively due to the environmental factor.
Lastly, the varying reaction to an emotion by each person is also determined by the physiological state of the person. An individual that did not get adequate quality sleep may be highly irritable compared to an individual that got adequate quality sleep. Even though all of these individuals face the emotion of disappointment, the person that did not get the requisite amount of sleep is likely to feel the intensity of disappointment to be high and react
