Mari Ann Caudill is a self-published author of several fantasy and mystery short stories. She started self-publishing her short stories in 2010 through Smashwords. She has been on a writing hiatus for several years and recently published some flash fiction through Wattpad and on her website. Most recently she published a short story, "Destinee's Legacy." She continues to live in Kentucky with her three dogs and two cats, which keep her busy, when she is not writing.

Death wants to retire, but Destinee refuses to take his place. After all, she is a defiant teenager, not wanting to wield the dark magic that consumes the souls of the dead and take her father’s place as the reaper. There is no solution to what is to come, but she can hold onto hope that she can keep Death at bay and ruin his plans for her. Why does he need to slumber, anyway? His job can’t be that hard; he helps the dead souls cross over to where they need to go.

The calmness of the lake doesn’t seem to calm her as the events of the past month continue to replay over and over. The seclusion of the lake house and the lack of socialization ravage her soul as the days flash before her. Death continues to lurk around every corner, waiting for her. She can’t hide from him forever, but hopefully just a little longer.
