    Chapter One

The rain hammers against the windshield as Allison drives quickly down the old country road. The wipers are on full blast on her 1979 Corolla, yet the road is still not visible, and she curses under her breath as the car glides over the water-covered road. She hits the brakes to slow down as a thick fog stands before her and the heat engulfs the small valley. She hasn’t been home in six years, and she hates herself for it. Her father is terminally ill, and her mother passed away four years ago. She dared not return for the funeral because of the turmoil that she placed upon her family.

Her parents disowned her at sixteen, when she told them she was pregnant. The events of that night still play in her mind as questions are still unanswered, like why her parents were so angry when she returned home that faithful evening. As far as she knows, her parents kept the secret of her daughter and told no one of the pregnancy to protect them. Allison needs to get her father’s estate together and get out of the small town quickly, before something goes terribly wrong. She glances in the rearview mirror and sees her daughter’s head hanging toward the window, sleeping soundly in her booster seat.

A few more hours stand before them until they reach her parents’ farm. The storm clouds diminish, and Allison takes a deep breath as she continues down the foggy road, not seeing another car for miles. Taking a drink of water, she passes another winding curve, knowing the small town has been gossiping about her return. A runaway who left her parents alone six years ago and a girl who refused to return for her own mother’s funeral. She has tried to prepare herself for what is to come, because enemies await her, and she must keep her child safe.
