    Redemption

    Christian watches Skylar in silence as she holds her fancy bow and shoots the targets in the training area. The fake sun scorches their bodies as the trees provide little shade. Skylar’s speed is amazing, and he loves to watch her train but knows she will kick his butt if she spots him. Skylar stops abruptly, turning to see her best friend watching her. She wipes the sweat off her face and places the bow over her shoulder. She flips her hair back and walks toward him.

    How long?

    Long enough to see you would kick my ass in the tournament this weekend.

    I am not fighting you in the bow competition; it’s the firearms.

    Either way, you win. He gets to his feet. I might be able to take you in boxing. He laughs.

    Seriously, you are not funny.

    Why are you such a grouch today? He grabs his bag off the ground and tries to catch up with her.

    You’re bothering me, she snaps. I mean, I don’t understand why you are still hanging out with me and have not found a potential wife yet.

    Have you not seen the limited females in this place? I think you are the only one that is over eighteen, who is my age.

    Look, we need to stop this and move on.

    What the hell is wrong with you? He grabs her arm. We are just friends. I have never made a move on you after your sixteenth birthday party. Don’t you remember Stark threatened my life, sort of? He laughed. Something is wrong with you, and I want to know what it is! Skylar pulls from his grasp and rolls her eyes. Hey, if it’s that time of the month, I can come back in a week. He can see the tears in her eyes. Did someone hurt you?

    No, it’s nothing like that. She cracks a fake smile. I think I can handle myself. It’s, just… She pauses, trying not to reveal her secrets, but he is her best friend. They have grown up together, and he is just a year older than she is. She turned eighteen a few weeks ago, and everything is changing in her life. Join me at the sewer entrance at midnight, she whispers as she disappears from his sight.
