Author

Maurice McFadden

A native of the Bronx, New York, Maurice McFadden began his career in the entertainment business thirty years ago. Maurice advanced his creativity to another level as a published poet in 2012 with Balboa Press a division of Hay House. "Strength Like Yours: Poems" is an eminently human collection of poetry that serves as a timely reminder that there are certain conditions, fears, and joys that we all share, regardless of our heritage, social status, or life path. McFadden's first children's book, "Blessings Are For Dogs Too," is a true story about Oliver, his adopted cocker spaniel.

    A Brother's Testimony - Maurice McFadden

    SARA SMILE

I am sitting down at the kitchen table.

Waiting for you to walk through the door.

But realizing that I will not see you anymore.

This is the hardest time I have ever lived.

Trying to figure out how I support my brother, sister and all your siblings.

You will be remembered for all the things you cherished.

Because you cherished us like diamonds.

Missing you right now does not suffice anything.

Taught us well because you were a teacher.

I can never explain what you have done for me.

I am your oldest son and I adore the life you gave me.

So sad right now, I want you with me.

    My birthday is next week.

So, how can I do this without you?

Your early morning phone call to bless me on my born day.

You have always told me whether you were here or not that God will always be with me.

Mother’s Day is coming and mommy is gone.

Cannot send you a Mother’s Day card, no flowers that I can forward along.

What you have brought to our lives live on.

Sure, we will get through this.

But right now, these are the toughest days of my life.

The toughest days of my life.

You always had your business on point.

You always told us to do the same.

I am sitting at the kitchen table, and I do not even know my name.

I need you to help me to figure out what I am supposed to do.

You have been there always to guide us through.

People say it is going to be alright.

How can they say that when I cannot sleep at night?

Missing my best friend, my Ma, my confidante, my angel.

I know you send down blessings on me I cannot even see.

You made a difference in this world.

You taught us to make a difference as well.

    Instilled in us since birth.

So, thank you for not only making a difference in our lives but the world’s.

I look to the sky, my dove, wondering when I will see you again.

I cannot see what you see.

The almighty took a part of me.

    Took Sara for a flight.

    That our God knew better,

No more pain, no more sorrow.

    No more doctor’s appointment’s tomorrow.

    So, Sara smile

    You are with the almighty.

    Sara smile

You left a legacy through your travels.

Now the Masons and Eastern Stars honor your name.

You wanted to live and die in the Bronx, New York and you did so.

The hardest thing was to unplug those machines.

Once your three kids arrived, we all agreed to let you go.

But wished you could have stayed until tomorrow.

    You had to be free.

When you were so cold, and our hands were warm,

We knew you could not keep going on.

We held you for your last few breaths.

    Then, there was sorrow.

It is Sara, Maurice, Mark, Tamara—forever.

    Smile down on us.

Smile on us from heaven’s gate.

    SEASON OF REFRESHMENT

Endeavoring to get the words onto the page

    I felt exhausted and discouraged

    I wanted to give up

    I needed to
