What people are saying about this book…..
Tapping into the behavioural characteristics of animals has been an effective way to teach life lessons since story-telling begun. From Indigenous creation stories to Aesop’s Fables, the valuable and cautionary tales that can be found in nature resonate. In ‘Negotiate Your Worth’, Sam has brilliantly captured the essence of some of Australia’s unique and iconic wildlife. The traits that have allowed these species to be perfectly adapted to their environment can also be techniques we can employ in strategic discussion and negotiation. Sam explores this in a fun and accurate way, and has taken the time to research each of the species so that the nexus is genuine. Within ‘Negotiate Your Worth’ we come away with a better understanding of ourselves and the inextricable links between humans and the world around us. These links and the shared future between humans and wildlife must be protected. I thank Sam for supporting the work of Taronga through this book.

What people have said about Sam’s other book, I Love Negotiating...
If you’re like most women, negotiation is not on your list of ‘love to’ – but it should be on your list of ‘must do.’ Over the course of their lives, women leave tens of thousands of dollars on the table by not negotiating. This book not only provides solid tools and tips, it also helps you to identify the emotions that may be getting in your way of negotiating with courage and confidence. I learned something from it and I’m sure you will too!

WHAT’S MY STORY, AND WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK
At this point, you may be thinking, ‘Well this sounds exciting, and yes, I would love to learn the tools that will make me a powerful negotiator but… Who is Sam Trattles? How did she become an expert in negotiating? What skills can I learn from her? And, how can she relate to me and my small business?’.
Well, here’s a little of my story. I worked for almost 20 years in corporate roles with industry giants like PricewaterhouseCoopers, Telstra, and Credit Suisse, and since leaving that behind I have been running my own service-based business.
I’ve negotiated over $550 million in deals to date with businesses, sports, arts, and community organisations, including SportAUS, Opera Australia, Mushroom Music, The Australian Ballet, National Rugby League, Tropfest, Australian Football League, Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Fire and Rescue NSW, Hong Kong Sevens, Olympics, Paralympics, and many more incredible brands and their leaders.
These deals taught me many things about negotiating. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly at the deals table over the years. One of the things that surprises many people is that you don’t have to be a jerk to be a great negotiator. Being a good communicator, having a growth mindset, and viewing things from both sides of the table means you’ll get great results and respect from your peers.
The day I stepped away from the corporate deals table to start out as a small business owner I had no idea of the adventure I was getting into!
The early days were exciting and challenging, a rollercoaster ride of learning and transformation. However, I had a problem. A BIG problem. I couldn’t work out why I was struggling to close deals. I came from a big gig where I was doing deals every day – multi-million-dollar deals. I was at the top of my game. So, I imagined closing deals would be the least of my problems.
I found clients through my networks, friends, and referrals, so the pipeline wasn’t an issue. But once I went to close the deal I’d suddenly hit a brick wall. As soon as someone questioned my rates I struggled. I didn’t know what to say. And, like most people, I took it personally, got frustrated, and questioned my capabilities.
It was a shock. I couldn’t believe I was doing such a bad job at securing clients. It got to the point where I was worried that I’d have to close the virtual doors of my business. I needed to take a step back, reset, and ask the question, ‘What do I need to know, think, and do to be able to negotiate my worth?’.
When I stripped it back there was a significant difference in the way I had to do my new job compared to my old ones. Essentially, in my corporate roles I was given a problem to solve and told to deliver a result. Pretty straight forward. But business ownership meant I had to:
• work out what problems I could solve for other people;
• go find someone who might have these problems;
• meet with them to understand their business challenge, and
• articulate how I could help solve their problem;
• determine how long it might take to get the job done;
• price the project;
• negotiate and close the deal;
• and THEN, start delivering it!!!
This is not a pursuit for the faint-hearted, but the joy you can experience building a business around what you love to do every day makes it all worth it. Especially when it all starts to fall into place. Once I understood that my job had fundamentally changed, I could identify the ‘tricky bits’ of the deal, and all the parts that contributed to that, and set about ensuring I had a toolkit of assets that would support my success.
Today I feel empowered to negotiate great outcomes for my business, which means I enjoy the process; talking about money with potential clients isn’t uncomfortable; and I know where I can be flexible and how to close deals efficiently. All things I know you can do too.
In 2016 I completed my first book I Love Negotiating – an easy-to-use workbook that guides you through the pitfalls of the process for everyday negotiations. I truly love negotiating, and the thought that it causes so many people pain doesn’t sit well with me. I wish I could add it to the curriculum in every school and encourage every family and friend group to find their voice and ability to engage in more healthy debate and negotiations.
Building on my positive experiences with that book and with business leaders who regularly seek out my expertise to negotiate critical deals, I embarked on writing this book. Putting together the building blocks that have helped me overcome negotiation challenges and start achieving consistently positive results. I wanted to empower those who struggle with this most crucial part of small business ownership - negotiating your worth.
I hope this book builds your confidence at the deals table and empowers you to negotiate great commercial outcomes for your business.
I’m Sam Trattles. I help create powerful negotiators. And by working your way through this book, I know you will become one too!
So, let’s get cracking.
