Leadership - Karen Roy
Introduction
Leading is not just about being at the top of the corporate ladder, or being the president of your own business. Each of us has the capacity within us to be a leader.
One of the most difficult tasks in writing this book was to come up with the title. We wanted to make sure it had broad appeal. We didn’t want it to sound too ‘corporate,’ nor did we want corporations to think it was a book about small, home-based businesses.
We didn’t want managers and team leaders to think it was just for them - we want their employees to read it too.
We want people who have jobs and people who are in transition between jobs to realize this book is for them.
We want stay-at-home moms and dads to read it too.
Why?
Because leading is not just about being at the top of the corporate ladder, or being the president of your own business. Each of us has the capacity within us to be a leader.
Leading simply means to show others the way, to direct someone to do something, to be an example. Each of us can do this. Each of us regardless of our station in life, can take the lead in any situation or relationship - business or personal.
This book is about taking the lead.
It’s about taking the lead in building relationships; it’s about taking the lead in creating your own personal code of honour.
This book is about traditional leaders in organizations and their employees who choose to lead their peers.
This book is about relationships between entrepreneurs and their clients.
This book is about learning how to lead through negotiating and developing personal strategies for success.
This book is about you.
Chapter 1
Relationship building
Relationship building is about commitment and a genuine desire to help one another in any way.
Think of how old you were when you started to build relationships, back when we just called them ‘friendships’. You had friends you met on your fist day of school, friends you met at Brownies or Boy Scouts, your soccer buddies, your baseball team; your circle of friends was expanding. You were building relationships. Some short term, some that would span a lifetime. Relationship building has been around for a while. It’s not a new concept.
Networking has been around a long time, too. You network when you stop off at a co-workers desk in the morning to say hello. You network when you meet with a group of small business owners to share ideas. You network when you go out for a beer with the guys, or when you go on a girls’
