Writing Group On Wheels

I was up in Lake Placid, at the Lake Placid Film Festival, to see a few short films—ones that were accepted, unlike my own. I was not in a good mood.

I was by myself—the wife, a 1986 Miss Geronimo Sub (I like to brag), not feeling up to it, stayed at the motel.

I watched some films, and yes, they were better than mine.

I decided to hit a tavern on Main Street at the Mount Marcy Inn. I figured I owed it to myself.

I managed to get a seat at the bar, ordered a drink, and saw David Pleshe walk in. He had been a member of a writing group I was in.

We hadn't seen him for months.

David, I called out. Where've you been?

He stopped and said, Pancho, what are you doing here?

So, it was blah, blah, blah.

Turned out, he was there to pick someone up.

I'm, like, a designated driver—official, well, maybe, unofficial Lake Placid designated driver. Come on. Meet my writing group.

What writing group?

The Tupper Lake Writing Group. They're really wild—fantastic.

Sure. Just let me finish my drink.

No time for that. Bobby! Plastic cup!

In a few seconds I was outside hiding a plastic cup filled with scotch on the rocks inside my coat.

Dave flipped open the double doors of a small school bus that was double-parked in the street with the motor running.

As I got on the bus, Dave said, They're in the back. Hey kids, this is Pancho Mirage, the guy I told you about.

One woman, about 80 years old, turned around in her seat in the back of the bus. You're Punchy Mirage?
