Ollie Reed got to the door, and he had a feeling of dread. He’d done this too often. He’d given it up, but then, out of money, found himself back in the same old game in a tiny, going out of business city, in upstate New York.
But it was his job. He had to do it. The door was open. He expected to encounter the horrible stench of a long dead body.
He opened the door. Nothing. He found the light switch.
The place was empty. He heaved a sigh of relief and went down a long hallway that sloped steadily towards the back of the apartment.
The place had been cleaned up pretty well. No furniture at all.
As he headed down the hallway to the back of the apartment, on the left was the living room, a few feet lower than the hall.
As he got to the kitchen in the back, nothing was on the counters—nothing amiss.
