      Chapter 1

      Windy Hudson didn’t want to be a tomboy. It didn’t come naturally to her, but her father often wanted her to come along to help him, or just to keep him company, as he said, to be his friend. 

      This was code for filling in and doing what her brother usually did, going along on her father’s adventures, playing golf, tennis, renting boats—all the things her father wanted to do.

      Her father said he felt too lonely doing these things alone, which is what he had to do since Windy’s mother left, for parts unknown, and then her brother got stationed in Germany with the Army.

      Windy felt she needed to get away herself, to do something except hang around downtown Reno, Nevada, by the Truckee River, riding her skateboard,
