The Bumper Tag Coat

It was December 1946, and my father had bought me a new overcoat at Natelson’s Men’s Store in the nearby town of Elizabeth, N.J. I couldn’t have been happier. Christmas was still more than a week away, but Dad knew I didn’t have a good cold-weather coat, and he wanted me to have it to wear for Christmas.

On Friday night, a bunch of us guys headed for the American Legion Hall on the west end of Roselle, the borough where we lived. The Legion had opened up the place so older teens would have a place to meet and dance and have something to eat.
