AUTHOR’S NOTE FOR THE SYLVIA AND MAC FRENETIC FAIRYTALES SHORT STORY COLLECTION

Every now and then you find characters who flow naturally and are just fun to play around with. That’s how I feel about Sylvia and Mac.

It all started with me writing a short story about a young woman working in a movie theater who loved animated movies and in particular found herself enchanted by the voice of a particular voice actor. So I wondered what would happen if she actually met the voice actor. That’s how the story When I Grow Up came to be. The original intent was just to be a one-shot.

Later, I challenged myself to write some short stories about characters in various romantic relationships, and to my surprise, Sylvia and Mac (whose full first name is MacAuley) came back, and I learned a little bit more about them. The original story I wrote, Fairytale Detours, was done in third person because I totally forgot When I Grow Up was in first person from Sylvia’s perspective. The story that appears here, As My Fairytale Detours, are the same events of the other story but done in Sylvia’s first person point of view for consistency in this volume. If you’ve read the other story, reading this version will allow you to get in Sylvia’s head and see how she views things.

Later, after a long dry spell on writing, I just sat down and started to write one day, and words started to flow. I had no premise in mind when I started, but by the time I looked down I’d started yet another Sylvia and Mac story. These characters definitely want their time in the spotlight and I had fun writing it down. I would up splitting the results of that into two parts because there was a natural cut point. Enchanted Cracked Mirror I also made available for free serialized on Goodreads, but Facing Dragons can only be found here.

Most of the stories are past tense. However, When I Grow Up was written in present tense. I decided to preserve that,
