AUTHOR’S NOTE

This collection of four short stories started with me wondering about the romantic futures of several characters and situations I introduced in some of my early e-book anthologies. Sylvia, a ticket taker at a movie theatre, met the voiceover man of her dreams. Hospice worker Lara appeared to be using and leaving the widower Jared behind, but I’d always sensed there was more to that story. A career woman watched a waitress die in a diner hold-up, but I wanted to explore more how that waitress’ death might be able to dramatically change her life. These questions opened up the roads that led to Fairytale Detours, Always Holding You Dear, and The Patterns of Life, respectively.

The last story, Change of Perspective, wasn’t inspired by anything prior. I just recently noticed a photographer’s office where a disc jockey now rented out part of the space. I wondered not only how such a dynamic might work, but what might happen if two people in these aspects of the business who otherwise didn’t know one another ended up working together.

Each story is meant to be short, sweet, and largely escapist. Always Holding You Dear may be the heaviest of the four, but it required retelling parts of the original story from Lara’s perspective, where the other story is from Jared’s perspective and ends after a certain point. Fairytale Detours and The Patterns of Life take up after where the other stories left off and can be enjoyed independently of them.
