    AUTHOR’S NOTE

On weekends, SHANNON MUIR’S THE PULP AND MYSTERY SHELF runs weekend columns called BEYOND THE SHELF, where I shared whatever’s on my mind. However, this began on Thursdays under the title of THURSDAY THOUGHTS. From June of 2017 through November 30th of 2017. I began it to play up my first new stories in print in some time, and then thought it might be a good challenge to offer a weekly column about myself and my writing. I soon found that proved to be a bit challenging to maintain. Starting in December of 2017, I converted the column to a monthly format to give people a taste of what would be coming during the month on the blog. I later realized I would be better served showcasing more books, and instead decided to transfer the preview style post to my other website (which features items across the cross-spectrum of my career), starting April 2018 in that slot. BEYOND THE SHELF would start up later in a weekend format.

Another thing was that I’d hoped for more two-way interaction. I encouraged comments but received none. Admittedly, the fact comments are moderated on SHANNON MUIR’S THE PULP AND MYSTERY SHELF provided a bit of an obstacle. Still, the main thing I’d hoped for was direct interaction with the readers and this wasn’t really the format to get that. The reprints in this collection edit out the calls for interaction. This is also why you don’t really see calls for comments on BEYOND THE SHELF posts.

The weekly format of the posts did produce a wide variety of commentaries on my part. Some were thought out weeks in advance; others inspired by events that literally happened the night before the post needed to be published. Featured here are what I see as the top twelve columns
