Book Preview: #1 The Enneagram is a geometric figure that maps out the nine fundamental personality types of human nature and their complex interrelationships. It is a development of modern psychology that has roots in spiritual wisdom from many different ancient traditions.

#2 The Enneagram can be extremely valuable in today's world to show white and black, male and female, Catholic and Protestant, Arab and Jew, straight and gay, rich and poor that if they search beneath the surface differences that separate them, they will find a new level of common humanity.

#3 The Enneagram is not a religion, but it does concern itself with one element that is fundamental to all spiritual paths: self-knowledge. Without self-knowledge, we will not get very far on our spiritual journey.

#4 The Enneagram works best when you identify your type and begin to understand its dominant issues. You will find a questionnaire to help you narrow down your basic type, and between these two tests and the descriptions and exercises in the type chapters, you should be able to discover your type with a high degree of certainty.

The Enneagram is not a religion, but it does concern itself with one element that is fundamental to all spiritual paths: self-knowledge. Without self-knowledge, we will not get very far on our spiritual journey.

    #4

The Enneagram works best when you identify your type and begin to understand its dominant issues. You will find a questionnaire to help you narrow down your basic type, and between these two tests and the descriptions and exercises in the type chapters, you should be able to discover your type with a high degree of certainty.

The following are brief descriptions of the most typical types found in the book The Gifts of Imperfection. They are not an exhaustive list of each personality type’s characteristics, but they should help you get a sense of which two or three types you are most like.

    #6

The Sevens are the versatile, optimistic, and spontaneous types. They constantly seek new and exciting experiences, but they can become distracted and exhausted by staying on the go. They typically have problems with superficiality and impulsiveness.

    #7

The Riso-Hudson QUEST and TAS are two sets of questionnaires that will help you narrow down the possibilities for your type in less than five minutes with about 70 percent accuracy. If you are new to the Enneagram, take theQUEST and then the TAS to see if there is a match.

    Insights from Chapter 2

To obtain a correct result, you must follow these few simple instructions. Select one paragraph in each of the following two groups of statements that best reflects your general attitudes and behaviors, as you have been most of your life. Do not overanalyze your choices.

    #2

I have been independent and assertive. I set my own goals, get involved, and want to make things happen. I don’t like sitting around, and I want to achieve something big and have an impact. I don’t necessarily seek confrontations, but I don’t let people push me around.

    #3

I am a person who usually maintains a positive outlook and feels that things will work out for the best. I can find something to be enthusiastic about and different ways to occupy myself. I like being around people and helping them be happy. However, I have sometimes put off dealing with my own problems for too long.

    Insights from Chapter 3

    #1

The nine types are the foundation of the Enneagram system. They are not better or worse, but they do have different strengths and weaknesses. As you learn more about all of them, you will see how interdependent they are.

    #2

Type is a system that identifies how people react to different types of situations. It cannot tell us everything about a person, but it can tell us a lot about how we view the world and what motivates us.

    #3

The modern Enneagram of personality types is a hybrid, a modern amalgam, from a number of ancient wisdom traditions combined with modern psychology. It was not developed by any single author.

    Insights from Chapter 4

    #1

The Enneagram symbol is ancient, dating back some 2,500 years or more. The roots of the ideas that eventually led to the development of the psychology of the nine types go back at least as far as the fourth century A. D.

    #2

The person who brought the Enneagram symbol to the modern world was George Ivanovich Gurdjieff. He was a Greek-Armenian born around 1875, and he became interested in esoteric knowledge. He spent the early part of his life attempting to piece together whatever ancient wisdom he could find.

    #3

The Enneagram, taught by Gurdjieff, is a symbol of natural processes rather than a psychological typology. It represents the idea that God is One, and that everything in existence is the result of the interaction of three forces.

    #4

The Enneagram is a symbol that shows the wholeness of a thing, how its identity is the result of the interaction of three forces, and how it evolves or changes over time. It was developed by Oscar Ichazo, a man who was fascinated with uncovering lost knowledge.

    #5

The Enneagram is a system of nine types, developed by the Brazilian psychologist Ennio ichazo in the mid- 1950s. It is a mystical teaching that was developed in Jewish communities in France and Spain in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries of our era.
