Introduction
Do you truly know your own personality? Do you know which lens you use to view the world or what the underlying emotion drives you to react to situations a certain way? Many of us assume that we know everything there is to know about our personalities, but are there certain circumstances that seem out of the ordinary and you just aren’t able to describe them? If this has happened to you, then you may not know your personality as well as you thought.
This guidebook is going to help explore the Enneagram system and how it can be used to help you understand yourself better. Often there are miscommunications that occur between two people because they don’t know how each other views the world. If you have no idea what your own personality is, and how you view the world, then it is very hard to form meaningful relationships with others because you don’t know what you need from other people.
This guidebook is going to spend some time talking about the Enneagram system and all the different parts that go with it. We will take a look first at what the Enneagram is about and why it can be a powerful tool when it comes to learning about yourself, building up strong relationships and learning how to transform your whole life.
Then we move on to some of the basics that come with the Enneagram system. We explore the nine personality traits. While each of these can be split up into three main categories that describe how they look at the world around them, there are differences between each one.
You will quickly see that some see the world through a more logical approach. They see things as black and white and can’t understand why emotions would ever come into play with things, and they would never go through and trust their gut on something. Then there is the group that is based on their emotions. They may see the previous group as cold hearted and cruel because everything has to be done with emotions tied on. And the third group is all about listening to the body and following your intuition in order to make it through the world.
Each of these groups will see the world in a different way, and sometimes this can lead to misunderstandings. But when you are able to use the Enneagram to better understand which lens you use to view the world, it becomes easier to understand why you see things in a different light than others.
In addition, this guidebook will take a look at some of the ways that you can use the information about the different personality types to your advantage. We will explore how this information can be used to help you to build up better relationships and how you can utilize it to make some great transformations in your own life. While none of the personality types are bad and none of them are better than the others, each personality type has some positive and some negative aspects, and learning this system can help you to really enhance the positive aspects.
The Enneagram system can be a great way to help improve your life and get more out of your relationships because you take the time to learn more about yourself. When you are ready to really explore your own personality and see what all is out there, make sure to take a look through this guidebook to help you out.
Chapter 1
The Basics of the Enneagram
The Enneagram is going to be a personality typing system that has its basis around nine personality types. The theory behind this is that everyone is going to fall inside one of these nine personality types. Some say that it is a pretty ancient system, one that can trace itself all the way back to Sufism, while others believe that it is more recent. No matter where it comes from, it is still an interesting system that has a lot more complexity than you would think when you first look at it.
Our personalities are going to start developing when we are children. This is one of the ways that we cope and we will develop it based on the personal environment that we surround ourselves with. There are nine distinctive patterns that the Enneagram recognizes, and it can also help you to make predictions about how each of these personalities are able to change based on whether we feel secure or stressed.
So, why is it so important to classify someone in a specific personality type? Well, many of us find that it is difficult to understand the other people around us. A key to being able to break these barriers and start understanding others is to look at ourselves and others based on the Enneagram.
Of course, it can be hard to put our own personalities under the microscope. You may find that you will hear and discover things about yourself that are not always as pleasant as you had hoped. However, if you want to learn more about yourself and how the Enneagram can work for you, then you need to be willing to find out and address anything that might make you uncomfortable in the beginning. Everyone has things that they may not like about themselves, but the Enneagram can help you find these issues a bit better and will lead you to making the changes that you want.
There are a few things to remember when you work with the Enneagram. First, all of the different personality types that we discuss in the Enneagram are positive and any of the negative behavior that you may become aware of through this system can be remedied. And second, you need to be careful when it comes to typing someone else, or adding them into a specific category of the Enneagram. Unless you know someone really well, you may make a mistake and put them in the wrong group.
Yes, knowing where another person is going to sit on the nine points can lead you to understand them better and can open up communication. But there can be issues of stereotyping people and that can be a negative thing if you aren’t careful. Use this as a way to understand others around you a bit better but try to be careful about stereotyping anyone.
There is so much that comes into play when it comes to our personalities. We may assume that our personality is pretty much superficial, something to take into consideration, but not something that really matters all that much. Our personalities can really have a big impact on our lives though. Depending on the type of personality we have, it is possible that we would use our minds, our bodies (or our intuition) or our emotions to help us view the world and make decisions.
If we understand the way that we make decisions, we may be able to see how this can influence the way that we see the world. And when two people will opposite personalities meet, two people where one follows their emotions and one follows with their mind, then it makes sense that the two may run into some conflict at some point. They see the world in a different manner, so they are going to come at a problem, and any conflict, in a different manner as well.
This guidebook is going to explore more about the Enneagram system and what all the personalities are about. It will explore the nine personality types, what they all mean, and more to help you learn more about yourself than you ever did before.
What does the Enneagram term mean?
To break this down a bit, the words Ennea and Gram will mean nine and model respectively. What are these nine types of personalities? The actual names do vary based on the teacher you follow, but the classifications of all these are going to be similar. They include:
The perfectionist and the reformer
The giver and the helper
The performer and the achiever
The mediator and peacemaker
The boss and the confronter
The dreamer and the Epicure
The trooper
The observer
The tragic romantic
When you learn what your own type is, it becomes easier to understand the reactions that others have to you. Motivating yourself to achieve your goals in life will also be easier if you take the time to know what drivers your own personal behaviors. Those who use the Enneagram often believe that everyone is going to have one primary motivational driver that is going to be responsible for determining their actions, feelings, and thoughts. This driver, also known as a passion, will create the view of life that each person has.
While the idea of a passion can sometimes be seen as negative, it doesn’t mean that the personality type is negative at all. It just means that each person has a personality and
