There are three fundamental principles to keep in mind when dealing with others, especially when our aim is to win them over or influence them positively. First, never criticize, condemn, or complain.

Keep in mind that we are all self-preserving beings who are naturally compelled to defend, redirect, and reject all threats to our well-being, specifically threats to our pride.

Using criticism to win an argument, make a point, or incite change only takes us two steps backward. The results we seek can seldom be achieved through deprecation.

The subjects of our criticism will instinctively self-defend the moment we criticize them. When people are defensive, it becomes harder to break through their barriers and convince them of our perspective. Moreover, criticism acts like an invisible boomerang in the sense that it returns on the thrower’s head.
