Hard Drink and Food - Jurgen Depicker
Foreword Living the Bible
Scientific prudence is a wonderful method of understanding life. In addition, the sword-like logic has undoubtedly become the engine of progress. However, in our search for the ultimate scientific truth, we must not forget the ancient sources of wisdom, such as the biblical texts, which have accumulated a wealth of knowledge. It was Albert Einstein who once said: Science without religion is like a paraplegic, but religion without science is blind.
By the beginning of the third millennium from the Nativity of Christ, we found ourselves in a happy position: without the risk of burning at the stake of the Inquisition, we can use scientific methods to verify the knowledge preserved in the Bible, especially those related to the eternal human problem - precious health. In addition, it is necessary to check, if only in order not to fall for the bait of magnificent anglers from the mass media, who lure us with advertising, like barkers in an oriental bazaar. Exactly what is being foisted on us under the trade label healthy
in fact often serves not for the benefit of our well-being, but for the financial interests of clever merchants of the 21st century.
Even more striking is the fact that the Bible offers specific recipes for healthy eating. And these recipes are quite consistent with the current level of nutrition and show the way to health without eternal sores
of our ill-feeling civilization.
So why don't we follow the advice of biblical nutritionists
and... Hippocrates? The ancient Greek thinker and physician Hippocrates from the island of Kos (460 - 370 BC) is considered the founder of medicine as a scientific discipline. His motto was Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.
Interestingly, both orthodox Christians and no less orthodox atheists, in essence, pursue the same goal: to live in health and in harmony with themselves and the world. According to atheists, man has become accidental a by-product of evolution, a child of nature. Christians believe that the Lord made man in his own image and likeness. However, the same God created our whole world - nature with its countless gifts. In addition, accordingly, it can be useful for the well-being of any Homo sapiens.
For atheists, fields, forests and gardens are not God's work of landscape design, but the work of nature itself, offering us organic food. In addition, since we, people, according to atheists, are an accidental creation of the same nature, the use of fruits from its pantries and bins is simply ideal for us.
Deeply believing Christians believe that biblical tabernacles are an ideal space for human existence. In addition, it is hardly possible to eat healthier and wiser than according to the principles of the Bible. If you start eating in accordance with the biblical menu, then no stomach problems will threaten you, and your thoughts will not stubbornly circle around and around the topic Oh, what else would you like to have a bite to eat?!
.
The gifts of nature are useful to every person - whether he believes in the existence of God or does not believe. Both an atheist and a Christian can follow biblical dietary recommendations (the so-called biblical diet), unless, of course, they are at least a little worried about their own health.
Admit it: what associations does the word diet
evoke in you? You think of good intentions to drop by the New Year ... eleven extra kilograms. About crazy super diets, offered repeatedly in the market of great human illusions? About advertisements, promising you to lose weight in record time if you swallow these expensive little blue, pink, green, etc. pills, powders, pills - in short, uniform poison? About diet cocktails that - just mix them with one and a half percent milk - turn into incredibly tasty drinks that burn extra pounds on the vine, or rather, on the hips, waist, stomach?
Do you want to lose weight because you are overweight?
Or are you going to lose weight just because it seems to you that you do not meet the fashion ideals of beauty? Do you seriously believe that fashion models who convincingly demonstrate the absence of female forms are really healthy and happy people?
When you think about diet, what goes through your mind's eye? It is possible that (for what time!) you firmly decided
Iron
to withstand the most severe torture of starvation. Then what? Will you take up the old again - will you live as before and at the same time drive away
the kilograms lost during fasting? Moreover, in what magical way, may I ask?
Let us be honest with ourselves for once: if we are getting too fat, then only continued reforms
will bring significant weight loss success. Express diets can help you lose weight, but not for long - all lost then again
Grows
in the same places. Why? When you deny yourself food and even starve as part of any diet, your body quickly switches to the harsh times full of deprivation
mode. He tries to give as little as possible. In addition, if by the end of the period set by the diet, more than expected, you regained the norms of the ideal weight category, then the body will decide that you have cruelly deceived it all this time. Moreover, he will begin to greedily collect what was stolen from him.
The word diet
comes from the Greek diaita and means way of life
and wisdom of life
. And fasting courses from biblical lands were considered not an image and not the wisdom of life, but an accessory of a religious fast. That is, they were appointed, so to speak, according to divine necessity
in the most extreme case.
