My name is Fei Yen Cardinal. My mother was a Chinese immigrant who moved to the United States when she was a teenager. She worked in a gas station for a few years until she lost her job and had to work as a waitress. That was when she met my father, a Canadian-American who was new to town. She showed him around and they eventually got together. It’s just too sad that he died before I turned ten.

It must have been weird for my mother to marry a man of a different nationality. It went against all of her customs and traditions so I guess that was why she made it a point for me to never have a boyfriend. I never got the sweet ‘kiss under the rain’ after the high school prom or the chance to go out late, get drunk, and get laid. She made it a point to revert all of her errors by ‘fixing’ me. She said I was her ticket to balancing out the irregularities
