You’re cheating on me with her, Mindy screamed and her face contorted in anger.

The fear had been at the back of her mind for a while although it was the first time she’d brought her thoughts out in the open. She knew her husband’s trips to a ranch down south were about work, but the fact that it was where his beautiful ex-wife happened to live made her wonder if there was more to it. That the trips now seemed to take place on an almost weekly occurrence added to her suspicions and being so regularly left alone at home was also making her feel neglected.

I love you, Roy replied in a soothing tone. I promise that you are the only woman I want.

He put his hand on Mindy’s arm, but she slapped it away petulantly and walked out of his reach.

I don’t believe you, she spat out. You want to spend more time down there these days than you do here. If you love me so much, why don’t you want to be at home?

It’s just work, Roy tried to convince her. The owner is interested in buying our cattle, so I need to keep him sweet. It’s more difficult than I thought trying to get his signature on the dotted line though.

Why do you always have to go there? Mindy demanded. Why doesn’t he visit here?

Come on, Roy replied. He’s the client, so it’s up to me to make the effort. Plus he’s a successful rancher and he’s showing me his operations during my time with him. What? Mindy spat out. Like your ex-wife? Is it her you like seeing?

No, Roy replied immediately. I mean great things about work.

He moved towards her, but Mindy was in no mood to be near him or have him touch her while her anger seethed. She moved to the door of the room then turned back.

If you want to be there so much just go then, she shouted and walked out.

Mindy, Roy called after her in a despairing tone, but when no reply came back his voice became harsh. OK then, I’ll see you in a couple of days.

His words ignited her anger even more and she slammed the door of the bedroom when she walked inside. She paced from side to side as she tried to calm herself down, but the image of Roy kissing his ex-wife filled her mind. She walked to the dressing table and picked up his framed picture.

Bastard, she screamed as she hurled it at the wall.

The frame smashed as it hit and the broken picture fell to the floor. The urge to do more damage to something came on strong, but she resisted it as she walked to the bed and sat down. Her chest heaved almost painfully and she took deep breaths to try and get control of her emotions. It worked to an extent and the red mist began to clear from her mind. She threw herself back on the bed and as the anger slowly subsided she closed her eyes.

They were still closed five minutes later when she heard the knock on the bedroom door. For a brief moment Mindy thought it might be Roy, but then he would have just walked in rather than knocking. She let out a sigh as she rolled to the side of the bed and dropped her feet to the floor. Getting up, she walked across the room and opened the door to the sight of Hunter, the Mexican ranch hand in charge of the horses.

Is something wrong? she asked.

No, Hunter replied. I just wanted to let you know your horse is saddled and ready.

My... Mindy started and suddenly remembered that she’d planned to go for a ride. The argument with her husband put it completely out of her mind.

Are you still going out? Hunter asked.
