I’m busy, Marianne said in a loud voice when the ringing of the phone started.

Latrisha heard the clatter of fingers on keyboard and looked across the room to see her work colleague diligently beavering away. She realized why when she glanced at the telephone on her desk to see it was the flashing light of Mr. Morris’s line.

Come on, she protested and scowled. I dealt with him last time.

Marianne’s fingers continued to press keys and she didn’t look up from what she was doing. Latrisha rolled her eyes although there was no choice but to take the call. When a personal assistant wasn’t available, the calls came through to the secretarial room and whoever was free dealt with them. That was the case with Mr. Morris on this particular day and she’d already been to his office on one occasion. Latrisha ignored the tongue stuck out at her and said no more as she walked to the door of the secretarial room then stepped out to the hallway. She made her way in the direction of Mr. Morris’s office and wiped the grimace from her face when she got to the door. Sucking in a deep breath to prepare herself, she knocked then waited for the shout. When it came, she opened the door to walk inside.

She saw straight away that Mr. Morris wasn’t alone and was struck by the broad shoulders of the man sitting opposite the lawyer. It was a sign of a powerful physique, but he was facing away from her and she couldn’t see any more.

I need you to do something for me, Mr. Morris said. Mr. Vasiliev needs to use the restrooms. Take him along to them.

The grimace almost returned to Latrisha’s face, but she stopped it from showing.
