About this ebook

As is befitting a young woman in 1508 France, Julite has just entered an arranged marriage, but Julite has a horrific past. Once willful and spirited, her first husband found pleasure in controlling, terrifying, and abusing her, leaving her riddled with scars, both emotionally and physically, killing her spirit. The rumors surrounding her new husband, Alain, offer little comfort for her new arrangement.

Alain was grateful when his parents insisted he marry the young, beautiful widow, Julite. Her brother claimed she was a wild thing, willful, bright, and witty, fond of taking control and what she wants. So when he brings home a meek, silent, terrified woman he doesn't know what to do. He fears his past may be what is terrifying her. Will he be able to show her that he is no longer that man? Will he be able to bring out the wild thing buried so deeply within his beautiful Julite?

Sneak Peek:
I was breathless as I lead Vitesse back into the stable, exhilarated, my new husband grinning as he helped me dismount.
His beautiful smile as my body aligned with his was my final bit of encouragement. He had been good to me, over and over good to me, and despite my fear I reached up and kissed him, it was chaste and simple, but his hands were at my waist and Vitesse was at my back.
Almost as soon as I broke that simple chaste kiss he was kissing me again. I shrank, suddenly terrified. He would want more now, my god what had I done encouraging him?
His kiss was nothing chaste, his mouth opening, his tongue begging entrance. I made a tiny sound of terror and he froze, his eyes opening and seeing my fear. He stopped immediately, stepping back, his eyes guarded. I blushed crimson, my eyes filling with tears. He turned and stormed from the stables. I saw him rage across the pasture toward the house.
I could not postpone this forever, a married woman could not expect her husband to remain faithful if she was not willing to provide for his needs, and I could not bare the humiliation of an indiscreet affair like those Alain had previously had.

    About Lesa Fuchs-Carter

    France, March 1508

Kneeling beside him was one of the hardest things I'd ever done. The bishop sang out his Latin prayers over us. I tried to smile softly as I'd been taught to do, tried not to quiver in fear at his nearness. As my ladies had helped dress me for my wedding they had murmured things to help bring up my confidence, he was not like the other bastard, they told me. But I knew different. When my father had first started making arrangements that I would be married to my second husband I had started quietly asking about him, encouraging my lady Jehenne to find as much out about him as I could.

A wealthy man of some twenty-five years, Alain was the only surviving child of a nobleman, Lord Gillet Fournier and his Lady wife Mezot. Being the only child he was spoiled and known for visits to brothels and lewd conduct. Moreover, his own staff knew he was hard on his women, especially in the bedroom.

In truth that was what intimidated me the most. I had been sorely used and abused by my first husband, and considered it a great mercy when he had become too ill to take advantage of me. Despite my desire to refrain from speaking ill of the dead I am grateful that he is buried and can no longer harm me. I had thought since I had brought his significant wealth and the title of Duchess back to the family from my four years with him that my duty as daughter was fulfilled, my family would allow me to stay at my husband's estate and live out my quiet life tending to my small amount of land and household. I was, after all, the oldest girl, my elder brother was happily married, but my two younger brothers and younger sister surely deserved the vows of marriage before I entered into it again.

I trembled as I affirmed the vows, repeating the litany the bishop had me so say. I kept my eyes low to hide their tightness.

My new husband was a beautiful man, my ladies had nearly swooned when my father had announced that he would be my husband. I had remained stoically passive, simply nodding. The match was blessed by King Louis the VII, and the date was settled only after a few weeks. But despite his beauty, Jehenne had brought back little news that pleased me.

Finally the wedding ended and my new husband helped me to stand, my gold and blue gown making it difficult. He turned me to look at the pleased crowd. My mother was smiling softly, pleased with the union. My first husband had been old and ailing and the match had caused distress upon my parent's union. My new husband beamed at me, he had told me that he was grateful I was the widow his parents had selected, at least I was young and beautiful. It had been the only real comment that he'd given me, completely unconcerned if I even spoke. It infuriated me, but I bit my tongue as was good and expected of me.

Alain led me from the hall and we embarked for his castle. I had seen it once at a party my first husband had taken me to. He had called it flamboyantly extravagant, a sign of newer money. I had been shown around, but then dismissed, left to wander the halls while my husband flirted with other women.

    I hate to admit that
