    About the Author

    Arrested

    Busted. Arrested. Caught.

And I didn’t even care. The cuffs were still around my wrists, but his lips were on my neck. He may have been a cop, he may had brought me to the slammer in his police car, but now his hands were up my skirt and his lips were on my skin. I never thought I’d want this, I’d always said I’ll kill some cop if he arrested me, but now... now everything had changed.

Officer Ben Vaughn, rookie on the force. Those baby blue eyes to match that mop of blond hair. We kept tabs of who was new on the local PD, we had to. I needed to know who was willing to play ball and one look at the kid and I knew he would be trouble.

I may be young in years, but I’m old in life. That’s what my mama always told me. We ain’t got much in the way of opportunities, we never have, so my mama said it was always about making your own opportunities. An Alabama town with deep roots in racism and slavery means that not many white folks are willing to hire a smart young black woman, and even fewer are looking to give her a loan to start her own business.

So my mama went into business for herself. With me on her hip and too much cleverness for her own good, she began to change our town. This was long before meth was in the news every night. Crack was what everyone was worried about back then, but my mama saw a golden opportunity and she ran with it. She ran hard.

    She never smoked
