The Art of Building Self Discipline - Sera Henminston
INTRODUCTION
LIFE IS EASY WHEN YOU LIVE IT THE HARD WAY
Making difficult decisions is the sole difference between mediocrity and success. These choices range from the decision to stop eating unhealthy foods and replace them with healthier alternatives; the decision to turn off the television and devote more time to self-education; the decision to pursue your dreams rather than conforming to a common definition of success that does not bring you joy; and the decision to keep fighting even when you can barely stand on your feet.
Self-discipline is the key to making difficult decisions rather than sticking to what's easy. People who are just concerned with immediate gratification, with things that are secure, easy, and comfortable, are unlikely to achieve their long-term objectives. But how do you develop self-control in your daily life? How can you avoid short-term gratification in order to achieve your long-term objectives? The answers to these questions can be found in the book The Art of Building Self-Discipline.
Despite the fact that I've been a self-disciplined person since I can remember, thanks to my mother, I'm always looking for new information and guidance on how to improve my ability to resist temptations in my hunt. I've done several bizarre things, including: I've been fasting for nearly 50 hours. Every day for the next three months, I took two six-minute ice cold showers. In just 10 weeks, I shed nearly 30 pounds by following a rigorous diet. I've run for 45 minutes in shorts in sub-freezing weather on multiple occasions. I was lifting huge weights to the point that I could see stars in my brain. In three weeks straight, I wrote almost 100,000 words, which is equivalent to a 400-page novel.
What was I thinking when I did all of these crazy things? The solution is much more straightforward than you might imagine. I did them to push my bounds and see how far I could go with my self-control. And I'm not done with my experiments yet. I believe that nothing is more vital to a successful life than maintaining a high degree of self-discipline and continuing to grow on a daily basis, which is why I set goals for myself. I'm curious if I'll be able to resist the want to eat after fasting for over two days, or if I'll be able to go home when the Frigidaire makes my legs numb. My experience helped me better understand myself and taught me valuable lessons in self-discipline that can be applied to anyone's life.
But don't worry, you're not obligated to participate in my bizarre experiments. All you need to transform yourself is a willingness to learn how discipline works and use what you've learned in your life. The next chapters are meant to make learning the most important topics interesting and easy to remember, whether you want to learn how to stick to your new eating pattern or improve your entire life.
To help you get the most out of the book in the shortest amount of time, the majority of the information offered in this book is based on scientific research cited in the additional resources. I made the decision to not go into great depth about each study. Rather than focusing on the precise why
with complicated and monotonous study explanations, I'll focus on how
you can master the art of self-discipline. Without further ado, let's get started. In just over an hour, you'll have all you need to become more disciplined and achieve your long-term goals.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SELF-DISCIPLINE
CHAPTER 1:
HOW TO FORM A HABIT
Self-discipline may appear challenging, yet it can be reduced to one basic concept: automating your behavior in order to establish new habits. If you build new habits in your life, actions you can perform when tempted away from your long-term goals, you won't
