    How To Raise Chickens

She more you know, the better your end-product will be. This book is for those who wish to raise chickens and aren't sure where to start.

First, we'll cover how to raise chicks and get them off on the right foot. First, of course, their health and happiness must be given a proper set-up from day one.

Next, we'll walk through what it takes to care for adult chickens: feed, space, water, warmth, climate control, predator protection, and health care needs. You won't be complete without understanding the needs of chickens and how to provide them with what they need. Then, we'll talk about pastured chickens and get into the techniques used by folks who raise their poultry in the city.

Finally, we'll give you some ideas (and links) for how to use your little flock. Keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive guide for raising chickens, so I encourage you to do more research both online and at local meet-ups like this one: http://www.meetup.com/socialnetwork/

There are several different companies selling chickens. The best price per chick is often found at the local feed store or pet shop that sells puppies and kittens. If you're looking for a bargain, you'll need to get a package of 15 or 20 chicks. Some sources will sell half-chicks as one chick per bag. For this book, we'll be getting 20 for $50.

If you have an 'egg store' nearby, these will make great gifts. You can also buy 'kits' that include the chicks and all they need (food, water dishes, etc.); these range from $60-$100. If you get a half-chick, you'll also need to get a cardboard 'coop' (aka nest box) which you can easily make yourself with some plywood and a couple of pieces of
