    FOREWORD

I was first introduced to Ms. Cook in December of 2018. We were attending the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic Conference in Chicago at McCormick Place Conference Center. She was standing just outside the exhibits. My fellow music educators from Georgia were all congratulating her on the presentation she had just given. What, a black woman presenting at Midwest? How did I miss that? I thought. Although I didn’t know her, I learned she was in Orff education, which is how I may have overlooked such an event – since this area is not my field. Still, I would have loved to support her in that moment.

Now, we must understand that the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic Conference is the biggest national music confer- ence in country, and arguably the world. To present there is the highest of honors. I was instantly impressed to see a black female at this prestigious event. I congratulated her, along with the other educators, as I enjoyed the rest of the conference.

A couple of months later, Ms. Cook wrote a Facebook post in the Georgia Educator’s group asking to work with a composer. I wrote her back and we began exchanging emails. Once I saw her picture, I remembered seeing her at Midwest, although I never formally introduced myself. As we worked together on a song, I would also help her co-write other projects. I was immediately impressed at how strong of a musician Ms. Cook was. First, her ear was amazing! Her sense of pitch and ability to immediately harmonize were reminiscent of what I read of Ella Fitzgerald. Secondly, she was just a humble spirit. She had already been accepted to the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference in Athens, just performed at Midwest, and was so meek about it. Thirdly, I don’t think she knew how many great music ideas she had in her. She began discussing some of her compositional ideas, which I found to be intriguing as a composer. Lastly, I talked about her sense of harmony and pitch; however, her voice was solid. Ms. Cook was truly a jewel to hear sing.

The song we wrote together was called United We Stand. Truthfully, one would laugh at how we would go back and forth on this composition, as we stood disunited from time to time. We each had our separate vision about the final project, and we didn’t always agree on how the form should proceed in the song. Even then, Ms. Cook would say, I need a lemonade. Ms. Cook was nervous and shy about recording our composition. Luckily, her dad and one of her close friends helped convince her to record it. Now, this song we wrote together will be used during graduations at a large school district in Georgia.

Even at the time of this book’s printing, Ms. Cook and I are slated for more collaborations. Some for my productions, some for her productions, and some for musicals she’s directing. I’m excited to see the fruit of our musical endeavors.

I witnessed her ability to work with children at her elementary school firsthand. Her students were always sharp, prepared, musical, and fun to work with. Ms. Cook even put together a choir of faculty members to perform. The concert was packed. There was not enough room to fill the Cafetorium.

In this book, we get a
