Chapter 1
Yes, I do
In my eighth grade history class my teacher was named Mr. Williams. Everyone was seated and he began to take attendance. I noticed that for each person’s name he called, he would look them in the eyes and smile. After doing this for some time, I began to wonder to myself why this teacher was smiling and why he seemed to be so happy. I wanted to know, but I was too shy to ask. I wasn’t the only student who noticed this; one of the students asked him what he was so happy about. He replied, I’m so happy because I am saved, and Jesus is the Lord of my life.
The student asked, Saved? What does that mean?
He answered that he was saved from going to hell and that Jesus lives in him, making him so full of joy. Well, the other students and I wanted to know more about this saved life of his. He told us that he was not supposed to talk about God in the classroom and that he could get in trouble if they found out. He told us that if we were interested, we could come up to his room during our lunch hour and he’d be happy to answer any questions we had about Jesus.
So, I took him on his offer and went up to his room on my lunch hour to inquire more about Jesus. The more questions I had about Jesus, the more I became interested in being saved. As the weeks and months passed by, I closely observed his actions and conversations, and he continued to be so happy, smiling a lot, and so peaceful.
One particular day, Mr. Williams was passing out papers to my classmates and the papers were falling all over the floor. When he picked them up from the floor, more papers from his hand fell, and as he picked those up, he bumped into the desks of the students. He still had a big smile on his face, so I and all the students noticed it and one of the students asked, Mr. Williams why are you not angry, and why are you still smiling when your papers are falling all over the floor?
He looked up at all of us and said that Jesus was still in his heart, so why wouldn’t he still smile, be happy, and peaceful? It’s just papers falling.
This captured my heart because he was not acting like a normal person to me, and I was even more intrigued and began going to his classroom to learn more about Jesus every day. I asked how long he was saved and what kind of life he lived prior. He said that he was a police officer and used to smoke cigarettes, drank alcohol, and gamble. I said, no way,
and we both laughed hard. Then to top that off, he said he used to use profanity a lot, then we laughed even harder. I said, Because of how you are now, I can’t imagine you doing any of those things.
He said, I know that’s because Jesus changed me from the inside out and He changed all my desires.
So, Mr. Williams asked me when I was going to get saved, and I said that I didn’t know but I asked how I can get saved. He said all I needed to do was believe that Jesus died for my sins, rose from the dead, ask for forgiveness, and ask Jesus to come into my heart, and I would be saved. This is true according to Romans 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shallot be saved. For with the heart, man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation
(KJV).
I asked, That’s it?
I thought there would be more that I needed to do, and I was shocked that it was so simple. I told him that I didn’t have a church or a preacher to get me saved. He said, You don’t need a preacher or have to go to church to get saved.
He said I could get saved anywhere and at any time. That I could go home into my prayer closet and get saved.
My eyes opened up wide with excitement, and I smiled and said, you mean to tell me that I can go home today into my prayer closet and do those things you just said, and I would be saved, and I would go to heaven when I died?
He laughed and said, Yes, yes!
with excitement. I said, Okay, I’m getting saved as soon as I get home." When I got home, I ran to my bedroom, closed the door, got on my knees, and prayed to Jesus, telling him I believe he died for my sins and rose from the dead and asked Him to forgive me for my sins and come into my life. I sat for a while to see what would happen, but nothing happened. I thought that I must have done something wrong, so I did it again and again. Still, nothing happened, and I couldn’t figure out why.
When I got to school the next day, I told my teacher that I did it; I got saved but that I must have done something wrong because I didn’t feel anything, and nothing happened at all. He laughed and said that I didn’t do
