It is my intention that these words serve to effectually dress you in the armor of God. It is important to understand that you can be armed without ever studying this analogy that Paul has relayed to us. The armor of God is a mindset of the child of God who's accepted His Word as their reality. Paul's comparison helps us to grasp the spiritual reality of being born again into the kingdom of God yet still living in this body of death in Satan's world. The analogy gives us insight into the ways that we are vulnerable to things that challenge our peace, joy, and confidence in God. 

Putting on the armor of God is akin to dying daily; by reinforcing your identity in Christ, you stifle your old self. It is a means of feeding your spirit to strengthen it, and starving your flesh to weaken it.
